NP Clinical Placement Data

Here’s Clinical Match Me’s NP clinical placement data: the specialties students request, the program tracks they’re in, where they live, how far they’ll travel for a rotation and when they want to start. Every figure comes from placement requests that students, most of them nurse practitioner (NP) students, made on Clinical Match Me. We update the figures every month, and you’re welcome to reuse them for free as long as you credit Clinical Match Me and link to this page.
We publish this nurse practitioner clinical rotation data for journalists, nursing school faculty, researchers and NP students who want figures they can quote. Below, you’ll find our main figures as charts, a plain explanation of how we calculate them, and CSV and JSON downloads of the full dataset.

How we calculate our NP clinical placement statistics
Every figure on this page comes from anonymized placement requests on Clinical Match Me. Here’s what each term means and how we calculate the figures.
- Placement request: one student’s request for one rotation, with the specialty, start date and hours they need and where they’re willing to travel.
- The 12-month window: most figures use requests made from October 2025 to September 2026, the last 12 full months. The window moves forward one month with each monthly update.
- Calendar years: the start-month and request-month figures use requests made from 2021 to 2025, so every month of the year is represented equally. These years move forward each January. The year-by-year trends use the requests made in each calendar year, from 2021 for specialty groups and from 2022 for program tracks.
- Students and requests: home-state and region shares count students, each student once. Every other share counts requests.
- Missing details: we leave out requests that are missing the detail a share measures. For example, the track mix includes only requests that list a program track, and home-state shares include only students with a home state on file.
- Specialty groups: each group includes related specialties. Women’s health, for example, includes OB/GYN and gynecology rotations.
- Remote rotations: the remote share of mental health is the share of mental health requests made for a remote specialty, such as remote psychiatry.
- Medians: the hours figures are the median hours requested, and the distance figure is the median distance among requests that searched by distance.
- Regions: we group home states into the four regions the U.S. Census Bureau uses: Northeast, Midwest, South and West.
- Small groups: we leave out small groups, so no figure is based on too few requests.
- Rounding: we round shares to whole percentages on this page.

Questions about our NP clinical placement data
Can I use this NP clinical placement data in my article, course or research?
Yes. You’re welcome to quote, chart and share the figures under the CC BY 4.0 license described below. Credit Clinical Match Me as the source and link to this page.
How do I cite it?
Copy the ready-made citation in the Download and cite section above, which also shows the month of our latest update. Since the figures change every month, add the date you accessed this page. To cite a single chart, open Cite or embed this chart under it.
How often do you update the data?
We update our NP clinical placement data every month. With each update, we add the latest full month of requests and drop the oldest, so the 12-month window moves forward. The calendar-year figures move forward each January. Our latest update was in October 2026.
Who does the data include?
Students who made placement requests on Clinical Match Me in the period each figure uses. Most are NP students, and the rest include physician assistant students and students in other programs. Our students come from all 50 states. These NP student statistics describe students who used Clinical Match Me, rather than every NP student in the country.
Why do you publish shares rather than totals?
Shares and medians answer the questions people ask about NP clinical rotations: which specialties students request, where they live, how far they’ll travel and when they want to start. You can also compare shares fairly from one year to the next.
About this data
Our NP clinical placement data comes from anonymized placement requests that students, most of them NP students, made on Clinical Match Me. Most figures use requests from October 2025 to September 2026. The start-month and request-month figures use the full calendar years 2021 to 2025, and the year-by-year trends use each full calendar year from 2021 to 2025 (from 2022 for program tracks).
Each figure is a share of requests or students, or a median, and we update them every month (most recently in October 2026). The figures describe students who used Clinical Match Me, not all NP students nationally.
