NP clinical placement by specialty
An NP clinical placement looks different in every track. Know your track's hours, settings and credentialing before you search, so your school doesn't reject the placement later.
FNP rotations run 500 to 800 hours across pediatrics, adult primary care, women's health and geriatrics, usually over three or four distinct sites. PMHNP hours run 500 to 750 split between outpatient and inpatient psychiatric settings, and DEA registration matters once you're prescribing. AGPCNP placements need at least 500 hours, often 750 or more, with a dedicated geriatric portion in skilled nursing, assisted living or a geriatric clinic. AGACNP rotations are almost entirely hospital-based at 500 to 750 hours across ICU, step-down and specialty inpatient units, and hospital credentialing adds 4 to 8 weeks before you can start. Pediatric NP hours split into primary care and acute care tracks, each needing at least 500 hours and a peds-credentialed preceptor. WHNP rotations span at least 600 hours and depend on procedural volume: colposcopy, IUD insertion and endometrial biopsy.
Nurse-midwife programs set an AMCB birth-attending minimum, typically 20 to 40 births as primary attendant, plus antepartum, postpartum, well-woman and newborn rotations. DNP programs require more than 1,000 total hours from a BSN start, or roughly 400 additional post-master's hours. Do you get paid for NP clinicals?
No. NP clinicals count as course credit toward your degree, so they're unpaid. Your preceptor earns an honorarium for teaching you. With Clinical Match Me, the offer price is all-inclusive, so you'll never pay a separate fee to the preceptor.
Can I find preceptors for several rotations at once?
Yes, and many students with multi-rotation programs do. Submit a separate placement request for each rotation as soon as you sign up and we'll work them in parallel rather than in sequence. Many students secure every rotation of their program this way.
