The APRN Preceptor Shortage Isn’t Your Fault. But It Is Your Problem.
Supply Has Not Kept Up
The APRN Consensus Model standardized education requirements across all four advanced-practice roles, but it did not fix the preceptor supply problem. Clinics are overwhelmed, and providers who used to precept are maxed out.
Online Programs Compete Locally
If you are in an online or hybrid APRN program, you are competing for local preceptors with students from dozens of other schools across the country. Your zip code becomes a battleground.
The Search Falls on You
Your program requires hundreds of supervised clinical hours, but finding a willing preceptor is entirely your responsibility. Every week without one is another week your graduation could be delayed.
That's exactly why we built Clinical Match Me. Instead of chasing preceptors, qualified preceptors come to you.
How It Works
Three steps. That’s it.
1. Sign Up Free
Create your account in about 2 minutes. Submit your APRN Placement Request with your track (NP, CNM, CRNA, CNS) and specific specialty (FNP, PMHNP, AGNP, WHNP, pediatrics, midwifery, anesthesia, or other). Include your population focus, state of practice, and any state-specific practice-authority or prescriptive-authority requirements your preceptor must meet.
2. Receive Preceptor Offers
Our system notifies matching APRN preceptors in your area who are credentialed for your track, population focus, and state. Interested preceptors review your profile and send offers. Our smart outreach system also contacts qualified APRNs outside our network who fit your specific role and scope.
3. Start Your Rotation
Compare offers, verify the preceptor’s scope matches your program’s expectations, and choose the best fit. You only pay after accepting an offer. We handle paperwork between you, your preceptor, and your school. Money-back guarantee if your school rejects the placement.
No credit card required. No obligation to pay.
APRN Preceptorship Requirements by Role
APRN preceptorship requirements vary by role and state. Whether you’re pursuing NP, CNM, CRNA, or CNS credentialing, you’ll need preceptors in the setting that matches your track — and state scope-of-practice rules can change which preceptor-student pairings are permitted. An advanced practice registered nurse preceptor must be licensed in the state where you rotate and credentialed in a specialty aligned with your program. Cross-role rotations (for example, a CNS student rotating with an NP) are sometimes allowed but almost always require program approval and a written learning plan. If you’re unsure whether a preceptor qualifies, check your state board of nursing’s APRN rules before you commit.

What APRN Students Are Saying
Thousands of advanced practice nursing students have found their preceptor through Clinical Match Me.
APRN Consensus Model: What It Means for Your Clinical Placement
The APRN Consensus Model is the regulatory framework that standardizes education, certification, and licensure across the four advanced-practice registered nurse roles. Understanding the Consensus Model helps you anticipate which preceptors, which settings, and which state regulations apply to your clinical rotations.
The four APRN roles are Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP, including FNP, PMHNP, AGNP, WHNP, PNP, and other specialties), Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).
LACE (Licensure, Accreditation, Certification, Education) is the Consensus Model’s four-part framework. Your clinical placement must align with all four. Your program must be accredited (CCNE, ACEN, or ACME), your preceptor must hold current certification in your role AND population focus, and your state licensure board must recognize your rotation as meeting its scope.
Population focus is a required specification for all APRN programs. The six recognized populations are Family/Individual Across the Lifespan, Adult-Gerontology, Neonatal, Pediatrics, Women’s Health/Gender-Related, and Psychiatric-Mental Health. Your preceptor must be credentialed within your program’s population focus. An FNP cannot precept a PMHNP student’s psychiatric rotation; an adult-gero NP cannot precept a pediatric rotation.
Practice authority varies by state. Some states grant APRNs full practice authority (independent prescribing, independent evaluation and treatment); others require a collaborative practice agreement with a physician. Your rotation site must comply with your state’s practice authority rules, and your preceptor must be legally authorized to practice in that state.
The APRN Compact is expanding practice across state lines. States that have enacted the Compact allow licensed APRNs from compact states to practice in any other compact state without obtaining a new license. This affects telehealth rotations and out-of-state clinical hours. Your school may still require its own approvals.
Clinical Match Me matches APRN students based on role, population focus, and state-specific requirements. When you submit your APRN rotation request, specify your track, your population focus, and your state’s practice authority status, and we filter preceptors who can legally and appropriately supervise your rotation.
APRN Preceptor FAQs
Common questions from advanced practice nursing students
We specialize in placing Nurse Practitioner students across every NP specialty: FNP, PMHNP, AGNP, AGACNP, PNP, WHNP, ENP, NNP, and more. If your APRN program requires clinical rotations with a preceptor, we can help. Our network includes thousands of providers across all 50 states, and our outreach system actively recruits new preceptors in areas where demand is high.
Absolutely. A large portion of our students are in online or hybrid programs and need preceptors near their home. When you submit a Placement Request, you tell us the states or zip codes where you can do your rotation. We match you with preceptors in those areas. If we don’t already have someone in your location, our smart outreach system starts contacting qualified providers nearby to recruit them for your rotation.
Registration is completely free. You don’t pay anything until a preceptor sends you an offer and you decide to accept it. The standard rate is $1,995 for rotations up to 250 clinical hours. That price is all-inclusive and covers our fee plus the preceptor’s honorarium. No service fees, no rush fees, no separate preceptor payments. Payment plans are available from 2 to 24 months. Visit our Pricing page for full details.
Include those requirements in your Placement Request. If your school needs a board-certified NP, a physician in a specific setting, or a preceptor with particular credentials, we factor that into the matching process. And if your school ultimately rejects the preceptor for any reason, our Money-Back Guarantee gives you a full refund. You’re never stuck with a placement your program won’t accept.
Many students get their first offer within 24 hours. Most are matched within a few days to a couple of weeks. Harder-to-fill requests (rare subspecialties, very rural areas) can take longer, but our outreach system works around the clock to recruit preceptors for your specific rotation. The sooner you sign up and submit your request, the more time we have to find you the right match.
APRN is a broad category that covers all advanced practice nursing roles, so clinical settings depend on your specific specialty track. Our preceptors practice in primary care offices, specialty clinics, hospitals, psychiatric facilities, women’s health centers, pediatric offices, community health centers, urgent care clinics, and more. When you submit a Placement Request, you’ll specify your specialty track and clinical requirements, and we’ll match you with preceptors in the right setting.
Yes. We verify preceptor credentials before matching, and we handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor, and your school. If your school rejects the preceptor for any reason, you get a full refund through our Money-Back Guarantee. Over 10,000 students have used our service, and school approval rates are extremely high because we ensure preceptors meet standard credentialing requirements before they ever send you an offer.
Most APRN programs require between 500 and 750 total clinical hours, though this varies by specialty and degree level (MSN vs. DNP). Hours are typically split across multiple rotations that may focus on different patient populations or clinical settings. When you submit a Placement Request, you’ll specify your exact hour requirements, specialty focus, and preferred schedule. Our flat-rate pricing covers rotations up to 250 hours per placement.
As early as possible. Clinical site availability varies by specialty and location, and the best preceptors fill up fast. We recommend signing up and submitting a Placement Request at least 2-3 months before your rotation start date. Many students get matched within days, but starting early gives you more options and less stress. Since registration is free and there’s no obligation to pay until you accept an offer, there’s no downside to beginning your search early.
Free registration. No payment until you accept an offer.
