NP specialties are the patient populations nurse practitioners train and certify to care for, such as families, children, adults and older adults, or people with mental health conditions. The specialty you choose determines which board certifies you and which clinical rotations you’ll complete. We’ll explain the types of NPs, what each one does and who certifies it. Then we’ll share Clinical Match Me’s own data on which NP specialties students choose, how that mix has changed since 2022, and the rotations and hours each track requests.

TL;DR

  • There are six NP specialties, called population foci: family/individual across the lifespan, adult-gerontology, pediatrics, neonatal, women’s health/gender-related and psychiatric/mental health.
  • FNP is the most common NP specialty among students on Clinical Match Me. FNP students made 52% of placement requests that list a program track on Clinical Match Me from October 2025 to September 2026, and PMHNP students made 27%.
  • PMHNP’s share of requests fell every year from 2022 to 2025, while FNP’s share held steady.
  • All NP specialties have the same national program minimum of 750 direct patient care hours. Certification boards set their own minimums of 500 hours or more.
  • The median placement request on Clinical Match Me asked for 160 hours, so you’ll complete several rotations in any NP specialty.

What are the NP specialties?

There are six NP specialties, and the APRN Consensus Model calls them population foci. Adult-gerontology and pediatric NPs also train in either primary care or acute care. Here’s each population focus and the NP tracks within it:

  • Family/individual across the lifespan: family nurse practitioner (FNP)
  • Adult-gerontology: adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP) or adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP)
  • Pediatrics: pediatric primary care nurse practitioner or pediatric acute care nurse practitioner
  • Neonatal: neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP)
  • Women’s health/gender-related: women’s health care nurse practitioner (WHNP)
  • Psychiatric/mental health: psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP)

Your NP program, certification exam and state license all have to match the same population focus. The choice between primary care and acute care is about your patients’ needs, not your workplace. The Consensus Model says the scope of a primary care or acute care NP “is not setting specific but is based on patient care needs.”

Certified nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists and certified registered nurse anesthetists are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) too. They’re separate APRN roles rather than NP specialties.

What about NP specializations like oncology or dermatology?

Areas such as oncology, palliative care and nephrology are NP specializations you add within a population focus. Under the Consensus Model, you can specialize, but you “can not be licensed solely within a specialty area.” Specialty preparation builds on your population focus and can’t replace it. For example, the model says a family NP could specialize in elder care or nephrology.

Which NP specialties do students choose most?

Family nurse practitioner is the most common NP specialty among students on Clinical Match Me. In our placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, FNP students made 52% of placement requests that list a program track. PMHNP students made 27%, followed by AGACNP and AGPCNP students.

We report the FNP, PMHNP, AGACNP and AGPCNP tracks separately and group every other track together. Pediatric NP, women’s health NP, physician assistant and nurse-midwifery students are among those other tracks.

How has the mix of NP specialties changed since 2022?

In Clinical Match Me’s placement data, PMHNP’s share of requests fell every year from 2022 to 2025, while FNP’s share held steady. Below is each track’s share of requests in each full calendar year. Our track data starts in 2022.

  • FNP: 49% in 2022, 47% in 2023, 46% in 2024 and 48% in 2025
  • PMHNP: 38% in 2022, 35% in 2023, 29% in 2024 and 28% in 2025
  • AGACNP: 7% in 2022, 7% in 2023, 10% in 2024 and 11% in 2025
  • AGPCNP: 2% in 2022, 5% in 2023, 5% in 2024 and 4% in 2025
  • Other tracks: 4% in 2022, 7% in 2023, 10% in 2024 and 9% in 2025

PMHNP students made 38% of requests in 2022 and 28% in 2025. Over the same four years, FNP’s share stayed between 46% and 49%, and AGACNP’s share rose from 7% to 11%.

We see the same pattern in the rotations students request. In our data, psychiatric and mental health rotations made up a smaller share of requests every year from 2023 to 2025. Acute, emergency and hospital rotations made up a larger share every year from 2021 to 2025. To see how each rotation compares, read our guide to NP clinical rotations by specialty.

What do the different types of nurse practitioners do?

Here’s what the NP specialties involve and who certifies each one. For FNP, PMHNP, AGACNP and AGPCNP students, we’ve added the rotations they request on Clinical Match Me and how many hours they ask for.

Family nurse practitioner (FNP)

FNPs care for patients of every age, a population focus the Consensus Model calls family/individual across the lifespan. In family practice and other primary care settings, you’ll see children, adults and older adults for wellness visits, new illnesses and chronic conditions.

Certification: The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) awards the FNP-BC credential. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), now doing business as NPCB, offers its own FNP exam. AANPCB’s emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) exam is a specialty certification for NPs who already hold FNP certification.

Rotations: In Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, family medicine and primary care made up 36% of FNP requests, pediatrics 24% and OB/GYN 12%. The median FNP request asked for 150 hours.

Our guide to clinical hours for FNP students explains the hour requirements and how programs structure rotations. When you’re ready, find an FNP preceptor for primary care, pediatric and women’s health rotations.

Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP)

PMHNPs assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Under the Consensus Model, the psychiatric/mental health focus includes patients across the lifespan, so you’ll train to care for children, adolescents and adults.

Certification: ANCC awards the PMHNP-BC credential and requires clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. AANPCB offers a PMHNP exam as well.

Rotations: In our data, in-person psychiatry made up 42% of PMHNP requests and remote psychiatry 15%. Counting every remote specialty, 25% of PMHNP requests were for a remote rotation. The median PMHNP request asked for 160 hours.

To plan your hours, including telehealth and psychotherapy training, read our guide to PMHNP clinical hours and requirements. Then find a PMHNP preceptor for in-person or remote rotations.

Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP)

AGACNPs care for adults and older adults with complex acute and chronic conditions. The adult-gerontology population focus includes everyone from young adults to frail older adults.

Certification: ANCC awards the AGACNP-BC credential. The AACN Certification Corporation offers a second exam, the ACNPC-AG.

Rotations: AGACNP students request hospital and emergency settings. In our data, hospitalist rotations made up 20% of AGACNP requests, emergency medicine 15%, inpatient acute care 14% and ICU 13%. The median AGACNP request asked for 160 hours.

When you’re ready for your rotations, find a preceptor for your AGACNP rotations in hospitalist, ICU and emergency settings.

Adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP)

AGPCNPs provide primary care to adults and older adults, from preventive care and screenings to managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

Certification: ANCC awards the AGPCNP-BC credential, and AANPCB offers an adult-gerontology primary care exam.

Rotations: In our data, family medicine and primary care made up 27% of AGPCNP requests, along with adult medicine (15%) and geriatrics (13%). The median AGPCNP request asked for 160 hours.

On this track, you can find an AGPCNP preceptor for primary care, geriatrics and adult medicine.

Pediatric nurse practitioner (primary care or acute care)

Pediatric NPs care for infants, children and adolescents. Pediatric primary care NPs typically see children for wellness visits and everyday illnesses, while pediatric acute care NPs typically care for children with acute, complex or critical illnesses.

Certification: The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) offers both exams: the CPNP-PC for primary care and the CPNP-AC for acute care.

Rotations: Pediatric NP students are among the other tracks in our data, so here’s what we see for pediatric rotations across every track. Pediatrics made up 13% of all placement requests and 24% of FNP requests. The median pediatrics request asked for 135 hours.

To start your search, find a preceptor for your pediatric NP rotations in primary care or acute care.

Women’s health care nurse practitioner (WHNP)

WHNPs provide obstetric, gynecologic and primary care to women in inpatient and outpatient settings. The Consensus Model calls this population focus women’s health/gender-related.

Certification: The National Certification Corporation (NCC) awards the WHNP-BC credential.

Rotations: Women’s health rotations, such as OB/GYN and gynecology, made up 15% of all placement requests in our data. The median women’s health request asked for 150 hours.

When you’re ready, find a preceptor for your WHNP rotations in gynecology, obstetrics and women’s primary care.

Neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP)

NNPs provide critical care to acutely and critically ill newborns and their families, in neonatal intensive care units, hospitals and outpatient settings.

Certification: NCC also awards the NNP-BC credential, with the same clinical hour rules as its WHNP exam.

How many clinical hours do NP specialties require?

The national program minimum is the same for all NP specialties. The 2022 Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education set at least 750 direct patient care clinical hours for each population-focused NP track. The task force expected programs to take three to five years to make the change.

Certification boards set their own minimums:

  • ANCC (FNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP and PMHNP): 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours
  • AANPCB (FNP, adult-gerontology primary care and PMHNP): 500 faculty-supervised direct patient care hours
  • PNCB (pediatric primary care and acute care): 500 supervised direct care hours in that area, and PNCB strongly recommends 600 for acute care
  • NCC (WHNP and NNP): 600 clinical hours if you graduate by December 31, 2029, and 750 direct patient care hours if you graduate after that

Your program sets your exact total and decides how to split it across courses and rotations, so check your handbook. In Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, the median request asked for 160 hours. That’s one rotation, so you’ll complete several to reach your program’s total.

How to choose an NP specialty

  1. Start with the patients you want to care for. You’re licensed in your population focus, so choose the ages and conditions you most want to treat.
  2. Decide between primary care and acute care. In adult-gerontology and pediatrics, choose whether you want to provide ongoing primary care or care for acutely ill patients.
  3. Check the certification exams. Confirm which boards certify your track and that your program meets their clinical hour minimums.
  4. Plan every rotation your track needs. FNP students on Clinical Match Me requested pediatrics and OB/GYN as well as family medicine, so map out each one early. Although many students are placed within days, psych, acute care and women’s health rotations can be harder to fill, so try to request them as early as possible.

Once you know your NP specialty and your dates, submit a request for your next NP clinical placement.

NP specialties: questions students ask

How many NP specialties are there?

There are six: family/individual across the lifespan, adult-gerontology, pediatrics, neonatal, women’s health/gender-related and psychiatric/mental health. Adult-gerontology and pediatric NPs also choose primary care or acute care.

What’s the most common NP specialty?

Among students on Clinical Match Me, it’s family nurse practitioner. FNP students made 52% of placement requests that list a program track on Clinical Match Me from October 2025 to September 2026, and PMHNP students made 27%.

Which NP specialties treat patients of all ages?

FNPs and PMHNPs. Under the APRN Consensus Model, the family/individual population focus includes patients across the lifespan, and so does psychiatric/mental health.

Can you switch NP specialties after you graduate?

Yes, through a post-graduate certificate in the new population focus. Under the 2022 national standards, your new program reviews your past graduate education in a gap analysis and decides which courses and clinical hours you still need. ANCC, AANPCB, PNCB and NCC all accept a post-graduate certificate for their exams.

About this data

Every Clinical Match Me figure in this article comes from anonymized placement requests that students, most of them NP students, made on Clinical Match Me. Our students come from all 50 states. The track mix, rotation and hours figures use requests from October 2025 to September 2026. The year-by-year track shares use full calendar years from 2022 to 2025, and the rotation trend uses 2021 to 2025.

Each figure is a share of requests or a median, and we update them every month (most recently in October 2026). They describe students who used Clinical Match Me, rather than every NP student in the country.
