Preceptor vs Mentor: What’s the Difference?

Preceptor vs mentor: what’s the difference? A preceptor teaches and supervises you for a set period, such as a clinical rotation or a new job’s orientation, and evaluates your work. A mentor is an experienced colleague who guides your career, often for years. You and your mentor choose each other, and your mentor never grades you.

If you’re an NP student, the preceptor vs mentor question has a practical side. You’ll likely work with more than one preceptor before you graduate, and a preceptor who knows your work can become one of your mentors after the rotation ends.

TL;DR

  • A preceptor supervises and teaches you during patient care for a set period, such as one rotation or an orientation, and reports on your progress.
  • A mentor advises you on your career, often for years, and doesn’t evaluate you.
  • The difference between mentor and preceptor roles comes down to who arranges the relationship, how long it lasts, whether they evaluate you and what they focus on.
  • In NP school, your faculty approve your preceptor, and a clinical faculty member (sometimes called a clinical instructor) oversees your course.
  • Your preceptor can become your mentor after the rotation, and that mentorship starts with the trust you build during the rotation.

What’s a preceptor?

A preceptor is an experienced clinician who teaches and supervises you one-on-one while caring for their own patients. The 2022 national standards for NP education define a preceptor as “a qualified clinician … who collaborates with faculty to facilitate and supervise NP student clinical learning experiences in a faculty approved clinical setting.”

Hospitals use preceptors too. The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne defines one as “an experienced practitioner, who is formally assigned for a fixed period of time” to support a student or clinician moving into a new practice setting. Read our guide to what a preceptor is for the full definition and where the word comes from.

What’s a mentor?

A mentor is an experienced colleague who supports your career and professional growth, in a relationship you both choose. A 2006 article in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP) cites a definition of mentoring as a “naturally formed, one-on-one, mutual, committed” relationship “designed to promote personal and professional development beyond any particular curricular or institutional goals.”

In nursing, mentoring takes the long view. A review of the nursing literature by Jane Mills, Karen Francis and Ann Bonner found that mentoring concentrates on career progression, scholarly achievement and personal development. Time is one of the clearest preceptor vs mentor differences they describe: nurses can rely on a mentoring relationship “for a period of several years,” while a preceptorship is short term. A mentor might help you choose a specialty, prepare for your first NP job interview or think through a hard decision long after you graduate.

Preceptor vs mentor: what are the main differences?

A preceptor is arranged for you, works with you for a set period and evaluates your clinical skills. A mentor focuses on your career, in a relationship you both choose.

  • Who arranges it. Your school or employer arranges a preceptor, or approves one you find. You and a mentor choose each other.
  • How long it lasts. A preceptorship lasts one rotation or one orientation period. A mentorship can last for years.
  • Whether they evaluate you. Your preceptor completes your evaluations and reports to your faculty or manager. A mentor doesn’t grade you, so your conversations stay between the two of you.
  • What they focus on. A preceptor teaches the clinical skills and routines of one setting. A mentor helps with your career and the choices ahead of you.

Who chooses a preceptor, and who chooses a mentor?

Your school or employer arranges or approves your preceptor, while you and your mentor choose each other. Writing about pharmacy rotations, the AJHP author puts it plainly: the preceptor relationship “is prearranged, and neither the student nor the preceptor chooses the other.” In a hospital, your preceptor is formally assigned for orientation. In NP school, your program secures preceptors or approves one you find, and your faculty approve every placement.

A mentorship works the other way, since both people have to want it. The article’s advice for finding a mentor is simple: think about who you admire, then ask that person whether they’d be your mentor.

Does a preceptor or a mentor evaluate you?

Your preceptor evaluates you, and your mentor doesn’t. The national NP standards include a sample checklist from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). It asks preceptors to “complete appropriate evaluation forms at intervals outlined in course requirements,” discuss them with the student and verify the student’s clinical hours. Mills and her colleagues point out that mentors and mentees stay accountable to each other, with little reporting to anyone else.

Preceptor vs mentor in nursing orientation

In a hospital, your preceptor trains you on the unit when you start as a new nurse or move to a new specialty, and a mentor supports your career after that. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses writes its preceptor course for nurses “responsible for the integration of new and transitioning staff to independent practice.”

On Cleveland Clinic’s Nurse Essentials podcast, clinical nurse specialist Lydia Booher calls precepting “more of a short-term relationship” with “specific goals.” She adds that “you can start off being a preceptor and then become a mentor,” sometimes because the new nurse comes to trust their preceptor.

Nursing organizations also support mentoring. The American Nurses Association runs a free, four-month Career Mentoring Program for its members, and the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses offers free mentoring guides for new graduate nurses and nurses moving into a new role. Our guide explains what a nurse preceptor is and what the role involves on the unit.

Preceptor vs mentor in NP school

In NP school, your preceptor is a licensed clinician who supervises your patient care during a rotation, teaches you during visits, completes your evaluations and verifies your hours. Our article on what a clinical preceptor is in NP education explains the role in detail.

Your mentors can come from anywhere in your professional life: a former preceptor, a faculty member or an NP whose career you admire. AANP runs a mentorship program that pairs members, including NP students, with AANP Fellows, nurse practitioner leaders recognized for “outstanding contributions to NP education, policy, clinical practice or research.”

Mentoring can also begin during a rotation. In a study of NP preceptor and student relationships, researcher E.F. Hayes found that the factors predicting mentoring included the time students spent in their practicum, their preceptor’s experience and whether they chose their preceptor rather than accepting a faculty assignment. The study also suggests that a humanistic teaching style may matter as much as, or more than, a preceptor’s gender or discipline.

Where does a clinical instructor fit?

A clinical instructor is a faculty member employed by your school who oversees your clinical course, while your preceptor works at your clinical site. At the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, a clinical instructor can supervise several students at one or more clinical sites, and each student’s preceptor reports on their performance to the clinical instructor.

In NP programs, your clinical faculty member fills this role. The NONPF and AANP checklist asks faculty to take primary responsibility for the student, schedule site visits, review the preceptor’s evaluations and confirm clinical hours. So a clinical instructor adds a third role to the preceptor vs mentor comparison: your preceptor teaches you at the site, your clinical faculty evaluate you in the course, and your mentor advises you on your career.

How can your preceptor become your mentor?

Earn your preceptor’s trust through reliable work, invite their career advice and bring up staying in touch before your last day. Mentoring grows from trust, so give your preceptor good reasons to keep helping you.

Share your goals in your first week

Ask for a few minutes early on to share your learning goals and hear how your preceptor likes to teach. Tell them where you hope your career goes, too. A preceptor who knows you want to work in family practice or psychiatric care can point you toward the right patients and the right people. Our tips for working with clinical preceptors cover that first conversation.

Show up like a future colleague

A preceptor who can picture you as a future colleague has a reason to keep investing in you. Before you present a patient, form your own assessment and plan and be ready to explain your thinking. Then ask, “Is there anything you’d have done differently?” Help where your scope allows, such as with patient education, and follow through on the reading your preceptor suggests.

Ask for specific feedback, then show you used it

Specific questions bring useful answers. “What did you think of my approach to that patient’s assessment?” tells your preceptor what to comment on, while “How did I do?” leaves them guessing. When your preceptor suggests a change, make it, then mention it later: “You said my notes were wordy, so I’ve been working on that. Does this one read better?” Following up this way shows you take their teaching seriously.

Ask career questions as trust grows

As the weeks go on, ask about your preceptor’s own career. These questions look further ahead than one rotation:

  • “How did you choose your first NP job?”
  • “What would you do differently if you were starting again?”
  • “When you hire a new NP, what do you look for?”

Questions like these show you’re thinking about your future, and they give your preceptor a natural way to start advising you.

Ask about staying in touch before your last day

Near the end of the rotation, thank your preceptor for specific things they taught you, ask whether they’d be a reference and whether you can stay in touch. Our preceptor thank you letter examples can help with the wording. Respect their answer about how much contact suits them. Some preceptors are happy to hear from you a few times a year, and others welcome a quick message when you face a new job or a hard decision.

When you ask for a reference later, remind your preceptor of a patient or project you handled well. A specific memory makes it easier for them to recommend you.

Keep the relationship two-way after graduation

After the rotation, send short updates at milestones such as graduation, passing your certification exam and starting your first NP role. Ask focused questions, and tell your preceptor when their advice helped. As you gain experience, offer something back, such as talking with their students.

One day, you may precept students yourself. When you’re ready, you can become a preceptor with Clinical Match Me, and our guide on how to be a good preceptor will help you teach the way your best preceptors taught you.

How do you find a mentor as an NP student?

Start with people who already know your work, then look further through your school and professional organizations.

  • Former preceptors. A preceptor who watched you care for patients can speak to your clinical skills from experience.
  • Faculty. Your faculty know your goals, and some schools run formal mentoring programs.
  • Professional organizations. AANP’s mentorship program is open to NP students who are members, and its conferences and regional member meetings are a chance to meet experienced NPs.
  • NPs you admire. Contact someone whose career you’d like to learn from, say what you admire about their work and ask for a short conversation.

Over time, aim for several mentors with different strengths. A primary care preceptor might answer your clinic questions for years, while a psychiatric NP you met at a conference helps you decide whether to add a specialty.

Preceptor vs mentor questions

Can your preceptor also be your mentor?

Yes. The preceptor vs mentor distinction describes two relationships, not two kinds of people, so one person can fill both roles at different times. The change usually comes after your rotation ends, when your preceptor no longer evaluates you and you both choose to stay in touch.

Is a preceptor a type of mentor?

The roles overlap, but nursing organizations treat them as different relationships. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses describes a preceptor as “a faculty mentor and teacher to less experienced individuals.” The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses lists precepting and mentoring as two of five distinct career development relationships, along with coaching, peer-strategizing and sponsoring.

What are the three main roles of a preceptor?

Educator, role model and socializer. That framework comes from J.G. Alspach’s preceptor development program, published by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne builds its preceptorship model on it. Its preceptors teach and assess, model evidence-based practice and help new nurses and students feel welcome on the team.

Can anyone be a preceptor?

No. Your NP program sets the criteria, and the 2022 national standards ask programs to document each preceptor’s degree, license and national certification. Nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, certified nurse-midwives and other licensed clinicians can precept NP students once the program approves them.

Do preceptors get paid?

Programs recognize preceptors in different ways. The NONPF and AANP checklist lists continuing education credits, payment, adjunct faculty positions and library access as examples. If you’re a clinician, you’ll earn $1,000+ per rotation as a Clinical Match Me preceptor, and we pay your honorarium when your student starts their rotation.

Choose a preceptor who could become your mentor

Every preceptor you work with could become a mentor, so it’s worth choosing carefully. If finding a preceptor is your responsibility, Clinical Match Me can connect you with a nurse practitioner preceptor in your specialty. We’re a preceptor placement service for NP and PA students, and our founder is a nurse practitioner who struggled to find a preceptor as a student.
