Nurse Practitioner Clinical Hours Requirements

Nurse practitioner clinical hours are the hours you spend caring for patients under a preceptor’s supervision during your NP program. When you look up how many you need, two numbers come up: 750 direct patient care hours in the 2022 national standards for NP education, and 500 faculty-supervised hours for ANCC and AANPCB certification. We’ll explain where each number comes from and what counts toward your total. Then we’ll use Clinical Match Me’s own placement data to show how many hours a single rotation is, so you can plan how many rotations you’ll need.

TL;DR

  • The 2022 national standards set a minimum of 750 direct patient care hours for every NP population-focused track, in master’s and DNP programs alike.
  • ANCC and AANPCB certification require at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours.
  • Care you give patients through telehealth can count toward the 750 hours. Simulation can’t.
  • In Clinical Match Me’s placement data, the median placement request was for 160 hours, so reaching 750 hours takes several rotations.

How many nurse practitioner clinical hours do you need?

The national standard is at least 750 hours of direct patient care. The 2022 Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education, from the National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education, set that minimum for every population-focused NP track. Your program sets the exact total you need to graduate.

When you research clinical hours for nurse practitioner programs, you’ll see both numbers. They come from different sources:

  • 750 direct patient care hours is the program minimum in the national standards. It applies to all six NP population foci and to both master’s and DNP programs.
  • 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours is the minimum two national certification boards look for in your NP program when you apply to take their exams. They’re the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB).

Since 750 is higher than 500, a program that follows the 2022 standards asks for more hours than ANCC and AANPCB do. The task force expected programs to take three to five years to make the change, so check your program’s clinical handbook for the total that applies to you.

NP clinical hours requirements for certification, by track

Here’s the minimum each board lists for its exam:

  • FNP: at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours for ANCC’s FNP-BC and for AANPCB’s FNP exam
  • AGPCNP: at least 500 for ANCC’s AGPCNP-BC and for AANPCB’s adult-gerontology primary care exam
  • AGACNP: at least 500 for ANCC’s AGACNP-BC
  • PMHNP: at least 500 for ANCC’s PMHNP-BC and for AANPCB’s PMHNP exam
  • Pediatric primary care: at least 500 supervised direct care hours in primary care pediatrics for PNCB’s CPNP-PC
  • Women’s health: at least 600 direct patient care hours in your program for NCC’s WHNP-BC, and NCC raises that minimum to 750 on January 1, 2030

AANPCB, which now uses the name NPCB, specifies faculty-supervised direct patient care hours. Its candidate handbooks list the full eligibility rules for each exam. ANCC, AANPCB and NCC also check your program’s accreditation and your nursing license, so read the full rules for your exam before you apply.

What counts toward your nurse practitioner clinical hours?

Direct patient care counts. The national standards define direct patient care hours as time you spend providing clinical care to patients, families and groups in your NP population focus.

  • Telehealth can count. Care you deliver to patients through telehealth can count toward the 750 hours.
  • Simulation can’t. The standards say simulation “is not direct patient care.” Your program can still use it to prepare and assess you before a precepted rotation.
  • Your immersive experience can count. The standards call for a concentrated clinical experience near the end of your program, and its direct patient care hours can count toward the 750.

In Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, 25% of PMHNP placement requests were for remote rotations, compared with <1% of FNP requests. If you’re considering a remote rotation, check your program’s policy first, since your program decides which hours it accepts. For more detail, read our guide to what counts as clinical hours.

How many hours is one NP clinical rotation?

In Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, the median placement request was for 160 hours. Each placement request is for one rotation with one preceptor, so that’s the length of a single rotation, not your whole program.

Rotation length by NP track

FNP students made 52% of the requests in our data that named a program track, and PMHNP students made 27%. Here’s the median rotation length students requested on four NP tracks:

  • FNP: 150 hours
  • PMHNP: 160 hours
  • AGACNP: 160 hours
  • AGPCNP: 160 hours

For more on the two largest tracks, read our guides to FNP clinical hours and PMHNP clinical hours.

Rotation length by specialty

And here’s the median rotation length in each specialty group in our data:

  • Primary care: 160 hours
  • Psychiatric and mental health: 160 hours
  • Women’s health: 150 hours
  • Pediatrics: 135 hours
  • Acute, emergency and hospital: 160 hours
  • Other specialties: 125 hours

To see which specialties students request on each track, read our guide to NP clinical rotations by specialty.

How many rotations will you need?

To turn your nurse practitioner clinical hours into a rotation plan, divide your program’s total by the length of each rotation. For example, 750 hours in rotations of 150 hours each is five rotations. With 250-hour rotations, it’s three. Your program decides how many hours go in each clinical course, so start with its handbook. Our guide to how long NP clinical rotations are explains rotation length and timing in more detail.

If you’re budgeting for clinicals, most preceptors on Clinical Match Me charge a flat rate of $1,995 for rotations up to 250 hours. That price includes our fee and the preceptor’s honorarium (their compensation for teaching you), and we offer payment plans.

When do NP clinical rotations start?

In placement requests made on Clinical Match Me from 2021 to 2025, January was the most requested start month, at 20%, followed by May (17%) and August (15%). Those months match the start of the spring, summer and fall terms at many schools.

If your program spreads your hours across several terms, plan a rotation for each one. Although many students are placed within days, try to submit your placement requests as early as possible. The sooner you do, the sooner we can place you.

How to plan and log your nurse practitioner clinical hours

  1. Find your program’s total. Your clinical handbook lists how many hours you need, how many go in each course and whether telehealth hours count.
  2. Check your certification board’s rules. Confirm that your program’s hours meet the minimum for the exam you plan to take. When you apply, ANCC asks for a form and transcripts that show you completed your faculty-supervised clinical hours.
  3. Divide your total into rotations. Plan settings that give you patients across your whole population focus, since faculty review your clinical encounters for breadth, depth and type.
  4. Request each rotation early. Submit a request for each NP clinical placement as soon as you know your dates and specialty.
  5. Log every shift as you go. Record the date, your hours, the setting, and each patient’s age group and visit type in your program’s tracking system while the details are fresh.

Nurse practitioner clinical hours: questions students ask

How many clinical hours do you need to become a nurse practitioner?

At least 750 direct patient care hours in a program that follows the 2022 national standards for NP education. To sit for ANCC or AANPCB certification, you need at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. Your program sets the exact total.

Do DNP programs require more clinical hours than master’s programs?

The 2022 national standards set the same minimum for both: 750 direct patient care hours in master’s and DNP programs alike. Each program sets its own total, so check your handbook.

How long does it take to complete 750 clinical hours?

It depends on how many hours a week you spend at your clinical site. At 16 hours a week, 750 hours takes about 47 weeks. At 24 hours a week, it takes about 31 weeks.

How many clinical hours does a post-master’s NP certificate need?

It depends on your earlier NP education. Under the national standards, your program runs a gap analysis of your past graduate education to decide which courses and faculty-supervised clinical hours you still need. Between your earlier program and the certificate, you’ll need at least 750 direct patient care hours that meet the outcomes for the new population.

How many hours is an NP clinical rotation?

In Clinical Match Me’s data, the median placement request was for 160 hours. On the FNP track, the median was 150 hours.

Find a preceptor for your nurse practitioner clinical hours

Clinical Match Me is a preceptor placement service for NP and PA students in every clinical specialty. Our founder is a nurse practitioner who struggled to find a preceptor as a student, and since 2014 we’ve helped more than 10,000 students find preceptors.

Submit a placement request with your specialty and rotation dates. Choose the states you’re willing to travel to, or enter your zip code and how far you’re willing to travel. We’ll match you with preceptors in those areas. Preceptors review your placement request and send you offers. Our AI preceptor outreach also contacts qualified providers near you, even when there are no matching preceptors in our network. Then compare offers, choose the best preceptor for your schedule and learning goals, and start your rotation.

Free to join and no credit card required. Pay nothing until you accept an offer. Once you do, you’re protected by our Money Back Guarantee. If your school rejects your preceptor for any reason, or your preceptor cancels, you get a full refund or a replacement preceptor at no extra cost.

About this data

The Clinical Match Me figures in this article come from anonymized placement requests that students, most of them NP students, made on Clinical Match Me. The rotation-length, track and remote figures use requests from October 2025 to September 2026. The start-month figures use requests from 2021 to 2025, so every calendar month is fully represented. Every figure is a share or a median of requests, and we update them every month. The last update was October 2026.

These figures describe students who used Clinical Match Me, not every NP student in the country. We link each requirement to its source: the National Task Force standards, ANCC, AANPCB, PNCB or NCC.
