How long are clinical rotations in an NP program? Your program sets the hours for each rotation. How many weeks those hours take depends on your weekly schedule at the clinical site. NP rotations typically run over one semester.

To help you plan, we’ll use Clinical Match Me’s own placement data to show how many hours students request for a single rotation, on each track and in each specialty, and when they want their rotations to start. We’ll also explain what a clinical rotation is, how many rotations it takes to reach the national minimum and what to expect during a typical week.

TL;DR

  • A clinical rotation is a period of supervised patient care with a preceptor at a clinical site. NP rotations typically run over one semester.
  • The median placement request on Clinical Match Me from October 2025 to September 2026 asked for 160 hours.
  • The 2022 national standards set a minimum of 750 direct patient care hours for every NP track, so you’ll complete several rotations to reach your program’s total.
  • The number of weeks a rotation takes depends on how many hours a week you spend at your site.
  • January, May and August were the most requested start months in requests made from 2021 to 2025.

What’s a clinical rotation?

A clinical rotation is a period of supervised patient care at a clinical site, such as a family practice, a pediatric clinic or a hospital unit. As an NP student, you’ll care for patients under the supervision of a preceptor, a licensed clinician who teaches you and evaluates your progress.

Each rotation is part of a clinical course, and your program decides how many hours each course requires. Your school approves your preceptor and site before you start, and the hours you complete count toward your program’s total nurse practitioner clinical hours.

How long are clinical rotations?

Programs measure clinical rotations in hours, and in Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, the median placement request asked for 160 hours. Each placement request is for one rotation with one preceptor, so that median is the length of a single rotation. You’ll complete several rotations to reach your program’s total.

How long are clinical rotations on each NP track?

Here’s the median number of hours students requested on four NP tracks in our data:

  • Family nurse practitioner (FNP): 150 hours
  • Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP): 160 hours
  • Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP): 160 hours
  • Adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP): 160 hours

If you’re on the FNP or PMHNP track, our guides to FNP clinical hours and PMHNP clinical hours explain the certification rules and how to plan the rest of your rotations.

How long are clinical rotations in each specialty?

Here’s the median number of hours requested in each specialty group in our data:

  • Primary care: 160 hours
  • Psychiatric and mental health: 160 hours
  • Women’s health: 150 hours
  • Pediatrics: 135 hours
  • Acute, emergency and hospital: 160 hours
  • Other specialties: 125 hours

Your program decides how many hours each clinical course needs, so your own rotations could run longer or shorter than these medians. To see which specialties students request on each track, read our guide to NP clinical rotations by specialty.

How long are clinical rotations in weeks?

That depends on how many hours a week you spend at your clinical site. To estimate the number of weeks, divide the rotation’s hours by your weekly hours.

For example, here’s how long a 160-hour rotation takes on four different weekly schedules:

  • 8 hours a week (one 8-hour day): 20 weeks
  • 16 hours a week (two 8-hour days): 10 weeks
  • 24 hours a week (three 8-hour days): about 7 weeks
  • 32 hours a week (four 8-hour days): 5 weeks

Your program may also set a weekly pace. At United States University, for example, each FNP clinical course requires 135 hours over 8 weeks, and the FNP clinical handbook advises students to look for preceptors who are available about 17 hours a week. The same handbook says students shouldn’t spend more than 12 hours in a clinical day and should attend clinical at least one day a week.

Your preceptor’s schedule matters too, since you’ll see patients on the days your preceptor is in clinic. Before you commit to a preceptor, ask which days they work so you can plan your weekly hours.

How many clinical rotations will you need?

Divide your program’s total clinical hours by the hours in each rotation. Your program sets the total, and two national minimums apply:

  • 750 direct patient care hours: the minimum for every NP population-focused track in the 2022 Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education, from the National Task Force on Quality Nurse Practitioner Education.
  • 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours: the minimum ANCC and AANPCB require for national certification.

The task force expected programs to take three to five years to move to the 750-hour standard, so check your handbook for your own total.

Here’s how the math works. At 250 hours a rotation, you’d reach 750 hours in three rotations. At 150 hours a rotation, you’d need five. United States University, for example, divides its FNP program’s 540 clinical hours into four rotations of 135 hours each.

When do clinical rotations start?

In placement requests made on Clinical Match Me from 2021 to 2025, January, May and August were the most requested start months, at 20%, 17% and 15%. Many schools start their spring, summer and fall terms in those months. The University of South Carolina, for example, starts its spring semester in January, its summer sessions in May and its fall semester in August.

December and April were the least requested start months, at 1% and 2% of requests.

Do start months differ by NP track?

Start months follow the school calendar on every track. Here are the January, May and August shares for each track:

  • FNP: January 21%, May 16%, August 13%
  • PMHNP: January 21%, May 17%, August 16%
  • AGACNP: January 15%, May 19%, August 13%
  • AGPCNP: January 21%, May 14%, August 10%

AGACNP students also asked for November starts more often than students overall, at 11% compared with 7%.

When do students submit placement requests?

Students submit placement requests in every month of the year, even though their requested start dates concentrate in January, May and August. Here’s the share of requests made in each month from 2021 to 2025:

What does a week on a clinical rotation look like?

On clinical days, you’ll see patients with your preceptor, discuss each patient with them and document your visits. Between clinical days, you’ll log your hours and keep up with your coursework, since NP programs pair clinical courses with classroom courses throughout the program.

What happens in your first days at the site?

Expect an orientation before you start seeing patients. The 2022 national standards for NP education include a sample checklist of what faculty expect from preceptors. It asks preceptors to orient you to the clinical site, its policies, its electronic health record and the clinical team, and to go over your course objectives and learning goals with you.

What does a typical clinical day involve?

You’ll see the patients your preceptor plans for you and take on more of each visit as the rotation goes on. The same checklist asks preceptors to plan your tasks and patient cases for each clinical day, and to set a plan for you to move from observing visits to conducting them with minimal help. Early on, expect to watch your preceptor work. Later, you’ll take the history, examine the patient and present your assessment and plan to your preceptor.

After each clinical day, log your hours and patient encounters the way your program asks. Your handbook sets how soon each encounter has to be logged and what counts as patient time. The national checklist also asks preceptors to verify your hours.

Who checks on your progress?

Your faculty and your preceptor both do. Under the national standards, you, your preceptor and your faculty meet to review your progress, either on site or virtually. Your preceptor will also complete evaluations at the intervals your course sets and discuss them with you, so you’ll know what’s going well and what to work on next.

How to plan your NP clinical rotation timeline

Use these steps to turn your program’s hour requirements into a schedule.

  1. Find your totals. Check your program handbook for your total clinical hours and the hours each clinical course requires.
  2. Turn hours into weeks. Divide each course’s hours by the hours you can spend at a site each week, and confirm the result fits within the course dates. Some programs require you to finish each course’s hours before the course ends.
  3. Line up your start dates with your terms. Ask for a start date near the beginning of each clinical course, since some programs don’t let you log hours before the course starts.
  4. Confirm your preceptor’s clinic days. Make sure you can reach your weekly hours on the days they see patients.
  5. Request each rotation early. Once you’ve found a preceptor, send your school the paperwork right away. Your start date depends on your schedule and how fast your school approves the affiliation agreement.

Clinical rotations: questions students ask

How long is a clinical rotation?

NP clinical rotations typically run over one semester. In Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, the median placement request asked for 160 hours, and the number of weeks those hours take depends on your weekly schedule.

How long are clinical rotations each day?

You’ll work your preceptor’s clinic hours, and some programs set a daily limit, so check your handbook before you agree to a long day.

Do you get paid for clinical rotations?

No. Clinical hours are part of your NP education, so you complete them as a student rather than as an employee. Some programs state this in their handbooks. Our article Do You Get Paid for Clinicals? explains the scholarships and stipends that can support you while you train.

Does a longer clinical rotation cost more?

Most preceptors on Clinical Match Me charge a flat rate of $1,995 for rotations up to 140 hours, or $2,195 for rotations up to 250 hours, so your price stays the same at any length within each range. Longer rotations cost more. The flat rate includes our fee and the preceptor’s honorarium (their compensation for teaching you), and payment plans are available. See how pricing and payment plans work on our NP preceptor cost page.

Find a preceptor for your next clinical rotation

Clinical Match Me is a preceptor placement service for NP and PA students in every clinical specialty. Our founder is a nurse practitioner who struggled to find a preceptor as a student, and since 2014 we’ve helped more than 10,000 students find preceptors.

Submit a placement request with your specialty, your rotation dates and the hours your program requires. Preceptors review your placement request and send you offers. Then compare offers, choose the best preceptor for your schedule and learning goals, and start your rotation.

Free to join and no credit card required. Pay nothing until you accept an offer. Once you do, you’re protected by our Money Back Guarantee. If your school rejects your preceptor for any reason, or your preceptor cancels, choose either a full refund or a new preceptor.

About this data

Every Clinical Match Me figure in this article comes from anonymized placement requests that students, most of them NP students, made on Clinical Match Me. The hours figures use requests made from October 2025 to September 2026. The start-month and request-month figures use full calendar years of requests, from 2021 to 2025.

We report shares and medians only, and we update the figures every month. The last update was October 2026. These figures describe students who used Clinical Match Me, rather than every NP student in the country.
