PMHNP Clinical Hours and Requirements

PMHNP clinical hours are the hours you spend caring for patients under a preceptor’s supervision during your psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) program. National standards set the minimum, and your program sets the exact total you need to graduate. We’ll explain both, then use Clinical Match Me’s own placement request data from October 2025 to September 2026 to show which PMHNP rotations students request, how long those rotations are and when they start.
TL;DR
- The 2022 National Task Force standards set a minimum of 750 direct patient care hours for every NP population-focused track, including PMHNP.
- ANCC’s PMHNP-BC certification requires at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours and clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities.
- In Clinical Match Me’s data, the median PMHNP placement request was for 160 hours, so a full program takes several rotations.
- In-person psychiatry is the most requested PMHNP rotation in our data, and 25% of PMHNP requests were for remote rotations.
How many PMHNP clinical hours do you need?
The national standard is at least 750 hours of direct patient care. The 2022 National Task Force standards for NP education set that minimum for every population-focused NP track, including PMHNP. The task force expected programs to take three to five years to make the change, so check your program handbook for the exact total you need to graduate.
Two numbers come up when you research PMHNP clinical hours, and they come from different sources:
- 750 direct patient care hours is the program minimum in the National Task Force’s Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education (2022). It applies to every NP population and to both master’s and DNP programs.
- 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours is the minimum ANCC looks for in your PMHNP program when you apply for PMHNP-BC certification.
So ANCC’s certification minimum is 500 hours, while the national program standard is 750.
What counts toward the 750 hours?
Direct patient care counts, including care you provide to patients by telehealth. Simulation doesn’t count toward the 750 hours. Your program may still use simulation to check your skills before you start seeing patients with a preceptor, since the standards ask programs to confirm a set of core skills first. The standards also call for an immersive clinical experience near the end of your program, and the direct care hours in it can count toward the 750. For more detail, read our guide to what counts as clinical hours.
What does ANCC require for PMHNP certification?
To sit for ANCC’s PMHNP-BC exam, you need an active RN license and a PMHNP master’s, post-graduate certificate or DNP from a program accredited by CCNE, ACEN or NLN CNEA. ANCC also requires your program to include:
- At least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours in the PMHNP program
- Clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities
- Three separate graduate courses in advanced physiology and pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and advanced pharmacology
- Content in health promotion, plus differential diagnosis and disease management
ANCC can authorize you to test once your coursework and faculty-supervised clinical hours are complete, even before your degree is conferred.
Plan for the psychotherapy requirement early. In a psychiatry practice focused on medication management, you may spend little time providing therapy, so ask your program where you’ll complete that training.
How many PMHNP clinical hours does a post-master’s certificate need?
If you’re already an NP and adding the PMHNP specialty through a post-graduate certificate, your program starts with a gap analysis. The National Task Force standards ask programs to review your past graduate education and decide which courses and faculty-supervised clinical hours you still need. Between your earlier APRN program and the certificate, you’ll need at least 750 direct patient care hours that meet the outcomes for the new population.
ANCC sets its own rules for certificate applicants. You’ll still need at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours in the PMHNP program, and ANCC looks at the accreditation of the certificate program itself. Your program uses the gap analysis to set how many new PMHNP clinical hours you’ll complete, so ask for the results before you plan your rotations.
How long is a single PMHNP rotation?
In Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, the median PMHNP placement request was for 160 hours. Each request is for one rotation with one preceptor, so a 750-hour requirement takes several rotations of that length.
Spreading your PMHNP clinical hours across several rotations lets you see patients of different ages and complete the psychotherapy training ANCC requires. If you’re comparing tracks, our guide to FNP clinical hours explains the requirements for family nurse practitioner students.
Most preceptors on Clinical Match Me charge a flat rate of $1,995 for rotations up to 250 hours, so that rate applies to a PMHNP rotation of median length. That price includes our fee and the preceptor’s honorarium (their compensation for teaching you). Our NP preceptor cost page explains how pricing works, including payment plans.
Which PMHNP rotations do students request most?
In Clinical Match Me’s placement data from October 2025 to September 2026, in-person psychiatry was the most requested PMHNP rotation, at 42% of PMHNP requests. PMHNP students made 27% of all placement requests with a known program track, second only to FNP students. Here’s how their requests split across specialties.
In-person psychiatry
In an in-person psychiatry rotation, you’ll typically see patients for psychiatric evaluations and follow-up visits, help manage their medications and present each case to your preceptor.
For an in-person rotation, decide how far you’re willing to travel. Across every track in our data, the median distance students set was 50 miles.
Remote psychiatry and telehealth
Counting every remote specialty, 25% of PMHNP placement requests in our data were for remote rotations, and remote psychiatry alone made up 15%. That compares with <1% of FNP requests.
Under the National Task Force standards, care you provide by telehealth can count as direct patient care. Check your program’s policy on remote hours before you request a remote rotation. To learn how these rotations work, read our guide to virtual clinical rotations for NP students.
Remote rotations have become a smaller share of mental health requests over time. In 2022, 40% of mental health placement requests on Clinical Match Me were for remote rotations. In 2025, that share was 29%.
Psychotherapy
A psychotherapy rotation gives you supervised experience delivering therapy, which can help you meet ANCC’s requirement for clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. In our data, in-person psychotherapy accounted for 10% of PMHNP requests. Ask your program which modalities it accepts and how it wants you to document them.
Child and adolescent psychiatry
Child and adolescent psychiatry made up 9% of PMHNP requests in our data. ANCC’s PMHNP certification covers patients across the lifespan, so ask your program whether you need hours with children and adolescents, and how many.
Inpatient psychiatry
On an inpatient unit, you’ll typically care for patients during acute psychiatric episodes, from admission assessments through daily rounds and discharge planning. Inpatient psychiatry accounted for 6% of PMHNP requests in our data.
To see how PMHNP requests compare with every other track, read our guide to NP clinical rotations by specialty.
When do PMHNP rotations start?
In PMHNP placement requests made on Clinical Match Me from 2021 to 2025, January, May and August were the most common rotation start months. Those months match the start of the spring, summer and fall terms at many schools.
December and April were the least common start months, at 1% and 2% of PMHNP requests. Although many students are placed within days, psych, acute care and women’s health rotations can be harder to fill, so try to request them as early as possible.
How to plan your PMHNP clinical requirements
Use these steps to turn your program’s requirements into a rotation plan.
- Find your total. Your program handbook lists how many PMHNP clinical hours you need, how many must be direct patient care and whether telehealth hours count.
- Divide the total into rotations. Decide which settings you need, such as in-person psychiatry, psychotherapy, child and adolescent psychiatry and inpatient psychiatry.
- Cover your psychotherapy training. If you’re aiming for ANCC certification, make sure your rotations include training in at least two psychotherapy modalities.
- Choose in-person, remote or both. Confirm your program’s policy on remote hours first.
- Request each rotation. Match your start date to your school’s term, and send your school the paperwork as soon as you’ve found a preceptor. Your start date depends on your schedule and how fast your school approves the affiliation agreement.
- Log your hours as you go. Record each shift in your program’s tracking system while the details are fresh.
During each rotation, expect your faculty to meet with you and your preceptor to review your progress. The National Task Force standards require these joint meetings, which can take place on site or virtually.
PMHNP clinical hours: questions students ask
Which is harder, FNP or PMHNP clinicals?
Both tracks share the same national minimum: the 2022 National Task Force standards set 750 direct patient care hours for every NP population. The difference is in the rotations. If you plan to certify with ANCC as a PMHNP, you’ll also need clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. And psych rotations can be harder to fill, so try to request yours as early as possible.
Do telehealth hours count toward PMHNP clinical hours?
Yes. Under the National Task Force standards, care you provide to patients by telehealth can count as direct patient care. Confirm your program’s policy on remote hours first.
Does simulation count toward PMHNP clinical hours?
Simulation doesn’t count toward the 750 direct patient care hours in the National Task Force standards. Programs can use it to prepare and assess you before your precepted rotations begin.
Do PMHNP students need child and adolescent hours?
ANCC’s PMHNP certification covers patients across the lifespan, so ask your program whether it requires hours with children and adolescents. In Clinical Match Me’s data, 9% of PMHNP requests were for child and adolescent psychiatry.
How many hours is a PMHNP clinical rotation?
Rotation length depends on your program and your preceptor. In Clinical Match Me’s data, the median PMHNP placement request was for 160 hours.

About this data
The Clinical Match Me figures in this article come from anonymized placement requests that NP students made on Clinical Match Me. Unless a sentence names another period, they cover October 2025 to September 2026. Start-month figures come from requests made from 2021 to 2025, and the yearly remote figures name their year. Every figure is a share or a median of requests, and the figures describe students who used Clinical Match Me rather than all NP students nationally. We update the data monthly, and this version is from October 2026. We link each requirement to its source, ANCC or the National Task Force.
