Why finding a midwife preceptor is so hard
You need births attended, not clinic hours, and only a fraction of CNMs can offer them.
Births, not just hours
The American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) requires a set number of births attended during your training. Your preceptor has to actively manage labor and delivery, so a clinic-only CNM can't sign your births.
L&D units cap students
Hospitals limit how many midwifery students they allow on a labor and delivery unit. It's a high-liability environment. Many facilities take only one or two students at a time, and those spots fill months ahead.
A very small pool
Fewer than 400 freestanding birth centers exist in the whole country. In rural areas midwifery practices can be hours apart, and small program cohorts rarely come with placement support.
How to find a midwife preceptor
Post one request and let qualified CNM preceptors come to you.
1
Sign up free
Create your account in about 2 minutes and submit a placement request with your midwifery details: the rotation you need, your program's birth-attending minimum, your preferred setting mix, dates and total hours.
2
Receive preceptor offers
We notify matching CNM preceptors in your area, and interested preceptors send you offers directly. Our AI preceptor outreach also contacts birth-attending midwives outside our network, which is where most intrapartum placements come from.
3
Start your rotation
Compare offers, check each preceptor's birth volume against your program's minimum, then choose the best preceptor. Pay nothing until you accept an offer. We handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor and your school. You're protected by our Money Back Guarantee if your school rejects the preceptor or the preceptor cancels.
CNM preceptors are joining our network every week.

What to look for in a midwife preceptorship
A midwife preceptorship centers on birth attendance. The AMCB standard requires a documented number of births attended, so you need a preceptor with active clinical privileges in labor and delivery rather than clinic hours alone.
A strong nurse midwife preceptor is CNM-credentialed and practices somewhere with the birth volume to get you to your program's minimum. Ask about monthly births before you accept, because a preceptor with a slow quarter can leave you short of the number your certification depends on.
If your program needs a specific setting, we filter for it. We handle NP preceptor placement with your school directly, including the paperwork. Students on neighboring tracks search the same way for WHNP rotations, FNP hours or pediatric NP placements. Compare every track's hours in NP clinical placement by specialty.
Why midwifery students choose Clinical Match Me
Built for the rotation everyone competes for.
Outreach beyond our network
To fill an intrapartum rotation, our outreach identifies and contacts CNMs in your target area who haven't joined us yet.
Every rotation, one account
Midwifery programs often want separate preceptors for intrapartum, antepartum, postpartum, gynecology and newborn care. Submit a placement request for each and we'll work all of them at once rather than one at a time.
$0 until you accept an offer
Sign up, submit placement requests and message preceptors for free. Pay only after a preceptor sends you an offer and you accept it. The $1,995 NP preceptor cost is the flat rate most preceptors charge, and payment plans are available.
Money Back Guarantee
If your school rejects the preceptor, or the preceptor cancels at any point, choose a full refund or a new preceptor. Any reason counts.
Midwife preceptors in all 50 states
From rural birth centers to hospital-based CNMs in major cities, our network spans the country. We recruit most actively in areas where the nearest midwifery practice can be hours away.
You choose from multiple offers
More than one CNM preceptor can offer you a placement. Compare their settings, birth volume and locations side by side, then accept the one that fits your schedule and your program.
Thousands of NP students found their preceptor through us
We've placed students since 2014, and anyone can check our ratings.
Many midwifery students find us after weeks of cold calls. Some students receive their first offer within 24 hours. Read Clinical Match Me reviews on Trustpilot and Google, or watch their student testimonials on video.
Students post their reviews on Trustpilot and Google once they know whether the preceptor showed up, whether the school signed off, and whether we did the paperwork we promised.
Intrapartum rotations are among the scarcest in nursing, so the reviews worth your time come from midwifery students who secured one.
Meeting the AMCB birth requirement
To take the certification exam, you have to meet AMCB eligibility, and the birth-attending requirement is the most specific part of it. Your accredited program sets the number, typically 20 to 40 births as primary attendant across your intrapartum rotation.
What counts is narrow. You have to be present and actively managing labor and delivery from the active phase through placental delivery. Observing from the hallway earns you nothing. Your preceptor has to hand you increasing management responsibility across the rotation.
Hospital labor and delivery units are the most common training site, with continuous fetal monitoring and operative intervention on standby. Freestanding birth centers, which offer low-risk care with fewer interventions, and home birth practices count too. Antepartum and postpartum hours count toward your total clinical hours but do nothing for the birth-attending minimum specifically.
Programs differ more than students expect. Some ACME-accredited programs require 20 births, others 40 or more. Some want a mix of hospital and out-of-hospital experience, others accept hospital only. Read your program handbook before you plan the schedule, then tell us the minimum and the setting mix when you submit. We track each preceptor's typical monthly birth volume so you can judge whether the numbers work.
Midwife preceptor questions students ask
Common questions from midwifery students.
Can you find a preceptor for intrapartum rotations?
Yes, and it's the request we handle most. Intrapartum placements are among the most competitive rotations in midwifery education. We match you with CNMs who actively attend births in hospitals, birth centers or home birth practices, and our outreach contacts birth-attending midwives outside our network too. We verify preceptor credentials before matching.
Do I need separate preceptors for each midwifery rotation?
Usually, though it depends on your program. Many require separate preceptors for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, well-woman gynecology and newborn care, while some CNMs cover several of those in one practice. Submit a placement request per rotation and we'll work them in parallel.
Can I find a birth center preceptor rather than a hospital one?
Yes. Our network includes CNMs in freestanding birth centers, hospital-based birth centers, hospital L&D units and home birth practices. Name your preferred setting in your placement request. If your program requires a mix of hospital and out-of-hospital experience, tell us the split and we'll match for both.
How much does it cost to find a CNM preceptor through Clinical Match Me?
Registration is free and you pay nothing until a preceptor sends you an offer and you accept it. Most preceptors charge a flat rate of $1,995 for rotations up to 250 hours. That price includes our fee and the preceptor's honorarium (their compensation for teaching you). A smaller group of preceptors charge hourly rates, which vary by individual. If you'd like to spread out the cost, payment plans are available. See the full NP preceptor cost breakdown.
What if my school doesn't approve the CNM preceptor?
Choose a full refund or a new preceptor at no extra cost. Midwifery programs set unusually specific site requirements, so tell us yours up front and we'll match against them.
What clinical settings are available for midwifery rotations?
Our midwife preceptors work in OB/GYN offices, birth centers, hospital labor and delivery units, midwifery practices, women's health clinics, prenatal clinics and community health centers. Most CNM programs want antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and gynecologic experience, so tell us which rotation each request covers.
Will my school accept a preceptor I find through Clinical Match Me?
Yes. We verify preceptor credentials before matching, so schools approve most of our preceptors. We also handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor and your school. If your school rejects the preceptor, you're protected by our Money Back Guarantee. Choose a full refund or a new preceptor.
How many clinical hours do midwifery programs typically require?
Most CNM programs require a minimum of 720 clinical hours alongside a set number of births attended as primary attendant, typically 20 to 40. Those hours split across antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and well-woman rotations. Our flat rate applies to rotations up to 250 hours each.
When should I start looking for a midwifery preceptor?
As early as you can. You need a preceptor with enough birth volume, and birth centers and hospital L&D units cap student numbers tightly. Many students are placed within days, but the sooner you submit your placement requests, the sooner we can place you. Registration is free and you owe nothing until you accept an offer.
