Why finding a pediatric NP preceptor is so hard
Your preceptor has to be a peds provider, and there are far fewer of them than your FNP classmates have to choose from.
A much smaller pool
The pediatric preceptor pool is a fraction of the one FNP students draw on. Private pediatric practices are small, and many take one student at a time.
Children's hospitals favor partner schools
Children's hospitals fill their slots months ahead and give them to students from partner schools first. Without a formal agreement between your program and the hospital, you're competing for whatever is left.
Only a peds preceptor counts
An FNP or adult-care provider won't satisfy a core pediatric rotation. Your preceptor has to be a PNP, a pediatrician or a PA practicing in a pediatric setting, which narrows an already small pool.
How to find a pediatric NP preceptor
Post one request and let qualified pediatric NP preceptors come to you.
1
Sign up free
Create your account in about 2 minutes and submit a placement request with your track details: primary care or acute care (PNP-PC or PNP-AC), the age ranges you need from infancy through adolescence, any subspecialty interest such as cardiology, endocrine, NICU or PICU, and whether your program requires a children's hospital.
2
Receive preceptor offers
We notify pediatric preceptors in your area credentialed for your track, and interested preceptors send you offers directly. Our AI preceptor outreach also contacts pediatric hospitalists, NICU and PICU intensivists and subspecialty pediatricians outside our network for your specific rotation.
3
Start your rotation
Compare offers, confirm each preceptor's track credentials match your program, then choose the best preceptor. Pay nothing until you accept an offer. We handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor and your school. You're protected by our Money Back Guarantee if your school rejects the preceptor or the preceptor cancels.

What to look for in a pediatric NP preceptorship
A pediatric NP preceptorship covers the full developmental span, newborn through age 21. You'll work in general pediatric clinics, school-based health centers, specialty practices such as pulmonology or endocrinology, and pediatric urgent care.
A strong pediatric nurse practitioner preceptor holds the credential your track requires and sees enough volume across ages for you to meet your competencies. Track credentialing is strict, so a mismatch here costs you the rotation rather than just the hours.
If your program needs a specific setting, we filter for it. We handle NP preceptor placement with your school directly, including the paperwork. Students on other tracks search the same way for FNP rotations, PMHNP hours or WHNP placements. Every other track is covered in NP clinical placement by specialty.
Why pediatric NP students choose Clinical Match Me
Built for a specialty where the wrong credential ends the rotation.
Outreach for pediatric rotations
When there are no matching preceptors in our network, our AI preceptor outreach finds one for your peds rotation. It contacts pediatricians, PNPs and PAs at practices and clinics in your area and recruits them for you specifically.
Both pediatric NP tracks covered
We match across both tracks, from well-child visits, immunizations and adolescent care to PICU, NICU and pediatric emergency placements. Subspecialty rotations in pediatric cardiology and endocrinology are available too.
$0 until you accept an offer
Sign up, submit placement requests and message preceptors for free. Pay only after a preceptor sends you an offer and you accept it. The $1,995 NP preceptor cost is the flat rate most preceptors charge, and payment plans are available.
Money Back Guarantee
If your school rejects the preceptor, or the preceptor cancels at any point, choose a full refund or a new preceptor. Any reason counts.
Pediatric NP preceptors in all 50 states
Community pediatric practices outside the big children's hospital systems have providers who want to teach and almost never hear from a student. Our outreach finds them, which matters most when your program has no hospital agreement where you live.
You choose from multiple offers
More than one pediatric NP preceptor can offer you a placement. Compare their settings, track credentials and age mix side by side, then accept the one that fits your schedule and your program.
Thousands of NP students found their preceptor through us
We've placed students since 2014, and anyone can check our ratings.
Many pediatric NP students find us after weeks of cold calls. Some students receive their first offer within 24 hours. Read Clinical Match Me reviews on Trustpilot and Google, or watch their student testimonials on video.
Students post their reviews on Trustpilot and Google once they know whether the preceptor showed up, whether the school signed off, and whether we did the paperwork we promised.
Children's hospitals turn away more pediatric NP students than they take, so the reviews worth your time come from students who secured a placement.
PNP-PC or PNP-AC, and why your track decides the rotation
Pediatric NP programs split into primary care and acute care. The certifications, eligible settings and scope differ enough that matching rotations to your track decides whether your hours count toward completion.
PNP-PC prepares you for outpatient practice: private pediatric offices, community health centers, school-based clinics and pediatric urgent care. Your rotations cover well-child visits, developmental assessment, immunizations and acute minor illness. PNP-AC prepares you for hospital practice: pediatric hospitalist medicine, PICU, NICU, pediatric emergency medicine and inpatient subspecialty services, covering high-acuity pathology and ventilator management.
Subspecialty rotations in cardiology, endocrinology, oncology, GI and pulmonary may count for either track depending on the clinical focus. Outpatient subspecialty clinics generally count toward PNP-PC, inpatient subspecialty services toward PNP-AC. Dual-track programs graduate you for both certifications and can require 1,000 hours or more across the two settings.
Preceptor credentialing is strict on both sides. A PNP-PC rotation needs a primary-care-certified preceptor: a PNP-PC, a general pediatrician, or family medicine with a pediatric focus. A PNP-AC rotation needs acute-care credentials: a PNP-AC, a pediatric hospitalist, an intensivist or a pediatric emergency physician. Tell us your track when you submit and we'll filter for it.
Pediatric NP preceptor questions students ask
Common questions from pediatric nurse practitioner students.
What type of provider can precept a pediatric NP student?
For core pediatric rotations your preceptor has to be a certified pediatric nurse practitioner, a pediatrician, or a PA working in a pediatric practice. Family practice and adult care providers generally don't qualify. Check your program's rule, then tell us and we'll match against it. We verify preceptor credentials before matching.
Can you find preceptors for pediatric subspecialty rotations?
Yes. We place students in pediatric cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, NICU and PICU rotations as well as primary care. Subspecialty placements are the most competitive ones we handle, so submit your request as early as you can and our outreach starts recruiting for it.
Do you place both PNP-PC and PNP-AC students?
Both. PNP-PC students need outpatient pediatric clinics, private practices and community health centers for well-child visits, developmental assessment and adolescent care. PNP-AC students need children's hospitals, PICUs, NICUs and pediatric emergency departments. Tell us your track and we'll filter for preceptors credentialed in it.
How much does it cost to find a pediatric NP preceptor through Clinical Match Me?
Registration is free and you pay nothing until a preceptor sends you an offer and you accept it. Most preceptors charge a flat rate of $1,995 for rotations up to 250 hours. That price includes our fee and the preceptor's honorarium (their compensation for teaching you). A smaller group of preceptors charge hourly rates, which vary by individual. If you'd like to spread out the cost, payment plans are available. See the full NP preceptor cost breakdown.
What if my program has its own preceptor requirements?
Put them in your placement request: minimum years of experience, board certification, practice setting, patient volume, whatever your program specifies. We match only against preceptors who meet them, which is faster than discovering the mismatch after your school reviews the placement.
What clinical settings are available for pediatric NP rotations?
Our pediatric preceptors work in general pediatric offices, subspecialty clinics, children's hospitals, neonatal intensive care units, pediatric urgent care, school-based health clinics, adolescent medicine clinics and community health centers with pediatric services. Most programs want a mix across ages, so tell us what yours requires.
Will my school accept a preceptor I find through Clinical Match Me?
Yes. We verify preceptor credentials before matching, so schools approve most of our preceptors. We also handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor and your school. If your school rejects the preceptor, you're protected by our Money Back Guarantee. Choose a full refund or a new preceptor.
How many clinical hours do pediatric NP rotations typically require?
Each pediatric track requires at least 500 supervised clinical hours across rotations covering newborn, infant, child and adolescent care, with individual rotations running 120 to 250 hours each. Some programs split well-child care and sick visits into separate rotations. Our flat rate applies to rotations up to 250 hours.
When should I start looking for a pediatric NP preceptor?
As early as you can. Children's hospitals and large pediatric practices cap student numbers. Many students are placed within days, but the sooner you submit your placement requests, the sooner we can place you. Many pediatric programs also require family practice hours, so you can request an FNP rotation at the same time. Registration is free and you owe nothing until you accept an offer.
