Why finding an AGACNP preceptor is so hard
Your rotation takes place in a hospital, and hospitals set strict rules for every part of it.
Credentialing comes first
Hospitals want background checks, drug screens, immunization records and a facility orientation before you start on a unit. Many limit how many students they take at once, so you often wait months for a slot to open.
Exclusive program agreements
Many hospital systems sign exclusive contracts with local NP programs. If you're in an online or distance AGACNP program, you're competing for the small number of slots those contracts leave open.
ICU and ED slots are scarce
Critical care and emergency rotations are the most contested placements in any AGACNP program. Subspecialty hours in cardiology, pulmonology or neurology are harder still.
How to find an AGACNP preceptor
Post one request and let qualified AGACNP preceptors come to you.
1
Sign up free
Create your account in about 2 minutes and submit a placement request with your AGACNP details: your specialty focus, rotation dates, required hours and preferred locations. Tell us if you're in an online program, because it changes which hospitals we approach.
2
Receive preceptor offers
We notify matching acute care preceptors in your area, and interested preceptors send you offers directly. Our AI preceptor outreach also contacts ICU, emergency and subspecialty providers outside our network.
3
Start your rotation
Compare offers, confirm the preceptor holds privileges at the hospital where you'll rotate, then choose the best preceptor. Pay nothing until you accept an offer. We coordinate the paperwork with your school. You're protected by our Money Back Guarantee if your school rejects the preceptor or the preceptor cancels.
AGACNP preceptors are joining our network every week.

What to look for in an AGACNP preceptorship
An AGACNP preceptorship is hospital-based by design. You need hours in acute care: ICU, the emergency department, hospital medicine, or a specialty inpatient service like cardiology or pulmonology.
A strong adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner preceptor already holds privileges at the hospital where you'll rotate. That single fact decides whether your placement starts on time, because a preceptor who still needs credentialing adds weeks you don't have.
If your program needs a specific setting, we filter for it. We handle NP preceptor placement with your school directly, including the paperwork. Students on other tracks search the same way for AGPCNP hours, FNP rotations or PMHNP placements. For hours by track, see clinical placement for every NP specialty.
Why AGACNP students choose Clinical Match Me
Built for the track where hospital credentialing sets your start date.
Acute care preceptors nationwide
Our network includes AGACNPs, ACNPs, physicians and PAs working in ICUs, emergency departments, step-down units and acute care specialty services across all 50 states. If you're in an online AGACNP program, we match you with hospital-based preceptors nearby.
Outreach for hard-to-fill rotations
When an ICU, ED or subspecialty rotation is hard to fill, our outreach contacts acute care providers outside our network and recruits them for your rotation specifically.
$0 until you accept an offer
Sign up, submit placement requests and message preceptors for free. Pay only after a preceptor sends you an offer and you accept it. The $1,995 NP preceptor cost is the flat rate most preceptors charge, and payment plans are available.
Money Back Guarantee
If your school rejects the preceptor, or the preceptor cancels at any point, choose a full refund or a new preceptor. Any reason counts.
AGACNP preceptors in all 50 states
Community hospitals outside the big academic systems have acute care providers who want to teach and almost never hear from a student. Our outreach finds them, which matters most if your program has no affiliation agreement (a contract with a clinical site) where you live.
You choose from multiple offers
More than one AGACNP preceptor can offer you a placement. Compare their units, shift patterns and hospitals side by side, then accept the one that fits your schedule and your program.
Thousands of NP students found their preceptor through us
We've placed students since 2014, and anyone can check our ratings.
Many AGACNP students find us after weeks of cold calls. Some students receive their first offer within 24 hours. Read Clinical Match Me reviews on Trustpilot and Google, or watch their student testimonials on video.
Students post their reviews on Trustpilot and Google once they know whether the preceptor showed up, whether the school signed off, and whether we did the paperwork we promised.
AGACNP credentialing can delay a rotation by weeks, so the reviews worth your time come from students who finished credentialing and started their rotation.
AGACNP hospital credentialing and how long it takes
Almost every AGACNP rotation takes place in a hospital, so credentialing decides your start date. Give it 4 to 8 weeks before your rotation begins, which is the minimum buffer most programs recommend.
Hospitals typically want a federal and state background check, a 5 or 10-panel drug screen, current immunization records covering MMR, Tdap, varicella and the full hepatitis B series plus annual flu, TB screening by PPD or IGRA with a chest X-ray if it comes back positive, and BLS and ACLS certification. Gather these early, because chasing a single missing record can cost you a rotation.
Facility orientation runs 4 to 12 hours and sometimes spreads over several days. An academic medical center may want a full week covering HIPAA, sepsis and rapid-response protocols, and role-based EMR training. ICU and ED rotations usually add competency verification as well.
Your school and the hospital also need an affiliation agreement in place before you start. Large systems keep standing agreements with programs they already work with. If you're in an online or distance program, your school may have to negotiate one from scratch, which often takes 6 weeks or more. We pre-screen AGACNP preceptors for privileges at their primary facility and flag the likely timeline when you submit, so you start gathering documents early.
AGACNP preceptor questions students ask
Common questions from adult-gerontology acute care students.
What type of providers can precept AGACNP students?
Usually an adult-gerontology acute care NP, an acute care certified NP, a physician, or a PA working in an acute care setting. Your school may narrow that list, so tell us its rule and we'll match against it. We verify preceptor credentials before matching.
Can you find preceptors for ICU, ED and subspecialty rotations?
Yes. Our network covers medical and surgical ICUs, cardiac ICUs, emergency departments, step-down units and subspecialties including cardiology, pulmonology, nephrology and neurology. For the hardest subspecialty rotations our outreach recruits providers from outside our network rather than waiting for one to appear.
I'm in an online AGACNP program. Can you still find me a local hospital preceptor?
Yes, and a large share of our students are in exactly that position. We work with preceptors who take students from any accredited program, not only their affiliated one. Affiliation-only rules block many online students. Tell us your location and we'll match you with acute care preceptors nearby.
How much does it cost to find an AGACNP preceptor through Clinical Match Me?
Registration is free and you pay nothing until a preceptor sends you an offer and you accept it. Most preceptors charge a flat rate of $1,995 for rotations up to 250 hours. That price includes our fee and the preceptor's honorarium (their compensation for teaching you). A smaller group of preceptors charge hourly rates, which vary by individual. If you'd like to spread out the cost, payment plans are available. See the full NP preceptor cost breakdown.
How does credentialing work, and what if the hospital rejects me?
You complete credentialing with your school and the facility. We match you with a preceptor who wants to take you and help coordinate the credentialing paperwork. If your school rejects the preceptor for any reason, including stalled credentialing, we'll give you a full refund or a new preceptor.
What clinical settings are available for AGACNP rotations?
Our AGACNP preceptors work in intensive care units, emergency departments, step-down units, cardiac care units, surgical units, trauma centers and specialty inpatient services. Some programs also count urgent care or specialty outpatient clinics, so tell us what yours accepts.
Will my school accept a preceptor I find through Clinical Match Me?
Yes. We verify preceptor credentials before matching, so schools approve most of our preceptors. We also handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor and your school. If your school rejects the preceptor, you're protected by our Money Back Guarantee. Choose a full refund or a new preceptor.
How many clinical hours do AGACNP rotations typically require?
Most AGACNP programs require between 500 and 750 total clinical hours across acute, critical care and emergency rotations, with individual rotations running 120 to 250 hours each. Acute care scheduling differs from primary care: expect 12-hour shifts and weekend coverage. Our flat rate applies to rotations up to 250 hours.
When should I start looking for an AGACNP preceptor?
Earlier than you think. Hospital credentialing and background checks add weeks to onboarding, so submit your placement requests as early as you can. If your program also needs primary care hours, request an AGPCNP rotation alongside it. Registration is free and you owe nothing until you accept an offer.
