Why finding an FNP preceptor is so hard
FNP is the largest specialty in graduate nursing, so clinical sites get more requests than they can take.
Intense competition
FNP programs have the largest cohorts in graduate nursing. Dozens of your classmates are calling the same clinics for the same rotation spots.
Multiple rotations to cover
FNP rotations require exposure across the lifespan. You might need three or four preceptors across pediatrics, adult care, women's health and geriatrics. That's weeks of cold calls for each one.
Little help from programs
Some programs promise placement support and deliver a spreadsheet of phone numbers. Others leave you on your own. Meanwhile the best FNP sites fill up quickly.

What to look for in an FNP preceptorship
Your FNP preceptorship is where you log the clinical hours your program requires. You rotate through primary care clinics, community health settings and urgent care, seeing patients from infants through older adults.
A strong family nurse practitioner preceptor has at least two years of post-certification experience, has time to teach, and can sign off on the clinical hours your school requires for AANP or ANCC FNP-BC eligibility. Outpatient primary care is the most common FNP rotation setting, followed by urgent care and retail clinics.
If your program needs a specific setting, we filter for it. We handle NP preceptor placement with your school directly, including the paperwork. Students on other tracks search the same way for PMHNP rotations, pediatric NP hours or WHNP placements. To compare every track, start with NP clinical placement by specialty. Our guide to FNP clinical hours explains the national requirements and which rotations FNP students request most.

FNP preceptors in all 50 states
Rural and suburban clinics have preceptors who want to teach and almost never hear from a student. Our outreach finds them.
You choose from multiple offers
More than one FNP preceptor can offer you a placement. Compare their rates, locations and clinical settings side by side, then accept the one that fits your schedule and your program.
Thousands of NP students found their preceptor through us
We've placed students since 2014, and anyone can check our ratings.
Many FNP students find us after weeks of cold calls. Some students receive their first offer within 24 hours. Read Clinical Match Me reviews on Trustpilot and Google, or watch their student testimonials on video.
Students post their reviews on Trustpilot and Google once they know whether the preceptor showed up, whether the school signed off, and whether we did the paperwork we promised.
You're up against dozens of FNP classmates for the same clinics, so the reviews worth your time come from students who faced exactly that.
Understanding FNP clinical hour requirements across populations
Family nurse practitioner programs typically require between 500 and 800 total clinical hours, split across several population groups. Most CCNE-accredited programs mandate exposure to pediatrics, adult primary care, women's health and geriatric populations, with a minimum of 100 to 150 hours in each.
Individual rotations usually run 120 to 250 hours per semester, and most programs require you to complete them across three to four distinct clinical sites. A typical FNP clinical schedule means 16 to 24 hours a week of supervised practice alongside your coursework.
You log your hours in a program-provided system such as Typhon, Medatrax or E*Value: patient encounters, SOAP notes and procedure logs. Your preceptor signs off weekly or at rotation end, and your school tracks completion against AACN and CCNE standards. Most programs don't allow condensed makeup schedules, so falling behind delays graduation.
Accreditation matters here. ACEN and CCNE-accredited programs follow the AACN FNP competency framework, which specifies the population exposure you must complete, and NONPF adds its own competency expectations. When you match with a Clinical Match Me preceptor, we verify they meet your program's accreditation requirements before you accept.
FNP preceptor questions students ask
Common questions from family nurse practitioner students.
What type of preceptors qualify for FNP clinical rotations?
FNP rotations typically require a board-certified family nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician practicing in primary care, family practice, internal medicine or a pediatric setting. Most programs accept preceptors in outpatient clinics, community health centers, private practices and federally qualified health centers. We verify preceptor credentials before matching.
Can you help me find preceptors for multiple FNP rotations at once?
Yes. FNP programs usually require rotations across different populations, including pediatrics, adult and geriatrics, and often women's health. Submit a separate placement request for each rotation as soon as you sign up, and we'll work on all of them at the same time. Many students secure every FNP rotation through us.
How long does it take to get matched with an FNP preceptor?
Many FNP students receive their first offer within 24 hours, and most match within a few days to a couple of weeks. FNP is our largest network, so there are more family practice preceptors available than in any other specialty. For harder-to-fill locations our outreach contacts providers in your area who aren't in any database. The earlier you sign up, the more time we have to find the right match.
How much does it cost to find an FNP preceptor through Clinical Match Me?
Registration is free and you pay nothing until a preceptor sends you an offer and you accept it. Most preceptors charge a flat rate of $1,995 for rotations up to 250 hours. That price includes our fee and the preceptor's honorarium (their compensation for teaching you). A smaller group of preceptors charge hourly rates, which vary by individual. If you'd like to spread out the cost, payment plans are available. See the full NP preceptor cost breakdown.
I'm in a competitive metro area. Can you still find FNP preceptors near me?
Yes, and that's where our outreach helps most. Metro areas are the toughest for FNP students because every program in the city competes for the same clinics. Our AI preceptor outreach identifies and contacts family practice providers who aren't on any placement service, including private practices, urgent care clinics and community health centers that don't usually take students. We've placed FNP students in competitive metros nationwide.
What clinical settings are available for FNP rotations?
Our FNP preceptors work in private family practice offices, community health centers, federally qualified health centers, urgent care clinics, internal medicine practices, pediatric offices and rural health clinics. Most FNP programs accept any outpatient primary care setting where you see patients across the lifespan, and we match you to whatever your program requires.
Will my school accept a preceptor I find through Clinical Match Me?
Yes. We verify preceptor credentials before matching, so schools approve most of our preceptors. We also handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor and your school. If your school rejects the preceptor, you're protected by our Money Back Guarantee. Choose a full refund or a new preceptor.
How many clinical hours do FNP rotations typically require?
Most FNP programs require between 500 and 800 total clinical hours split across several rotations, with individual rotations running 120 to 250 hours each over a semester. Specify your exact hour requirements in your placement request and we'll match you with preceptors who can accommodate your schedule. Our flat rate applies to rotations up to 250 hours.
When should I start looking for an FNP preceptor?
As early as you can. The best FNP sites fill up quickly in competitive metros. Many students are placed within days, but the sooner you submit your placement requests, the more offers you'll have to choose from. Registration is free and you owe nothing until you accept an offer.
