Become a Preceptor
and Earn $1,000+ per Rotation
Become a preceptor with Clinical Match Me and earn $1,000+ per matched NP or PA rotation. Set your own rate and schedule. Free to join, and you choose every student you take.
Students looking for a preceptor send you their requests. Review them on your own time and send offers to the students who fit your practice, or let us send offers for you automatically.
Many preceptors teach unpaid
The teaching, the evaluations, and the paperwork all take time out of your day.
Students find you by calling your office or emailing you directly, and your front desk fields the ones you never hear about. If you say yes, you take on the teaching time, the evaluations, and whatever paperwork the student's school requires. You don't get paid for any of it, which is why many providers don't take students.
Precepting through Clinical Match Me is paid work: you join as a paid preceptor, and we list nurse practitioner preceptor jobs as they open. Students send you placement requests to review on your own schedule, so nothing arrives unannounced at your front desk. We handle the vetting and the agreement with their school.
Why clinicians precept through Clinical Match Me
Get paid to train future NPs and PAs, on your terms, while we handle the paperwork.
Preceptor pay: $1,000+ per matched rotation
Earn $1,000+ per NP or PA rotation. You set your own preceptor pay: the standard $1,000 flat fee, a higher flat fee, or your own hourly rate. We pay your honorarium as soon as the rotation starts.
Shape the next generation of NPs and PAs
Students learn your clinical judgment, your patient-management style and your specialty's decision-making by working alongside you. The providers you train today become the colleagues you work with, refer to, and rely on for years to come. Precepting is a great way to improve care in your specialty.
Full control over your terms
Set your own availability, your own school preferences, your own student limits, and your own preceptor pay. Take as many or as few students as you want. You're always in control. Free to sign up. Non-exclusive, so you can keep any other precepting arrangements you have. Pause or step away any time without penalty.
We handle the paperwork
We vet each student (enrollment, malpractice, and school affiliation), complete the affiliation paperwork on each school's existing template, and process your payment. We arrange NP preceptor placement with the school directly. You sign one form per rotation. We handle everything else.

How does preceptor pay work?
You receive direct compensation for every NP or PA rotation you precept through Clinical Match Me. The standard honorarium is $1,000 per rotation, and you can set a higher flat fee or an hourly rate. We pay you when the rotation starts, not when it ends.
Clinical Match Me pays you for the mentoring you provide. You set your own rates, decide which students to send offers to, and get paid on your terms.
How much is preceptor pay?
The same rate structure applies whether you take NP or PA students. You set your own rates.
NP students
$1,000+ per matched rotationYou set your own preceptor pay: the standard $1,000 flat fee, a higher flat fee, or an hourly rate. NP rotations typically run over one semester and we pay you when the rotation starts.
PA students
$1,000+ per matched rotationSame rate structure as NP rotations: a standard $1,000 flat fee, a higher flat fee, or an hourly rate. PA rotations are typically full-time over 4 to 6 weeks. We pay you when the rotation starts.
What does precepting NP students look like?
If you've never precepted before, here's what a rotation looks like day to day.
NP students shadow you during your normal patient visits, gradually taking on more responsibility as they gain confidence. You do what you already do every day, with a student learning alongside you.
Most NP rotations run 3 to 4 days per week over a semester. You choose the days that work for your schedule. Early on, students mostly observe and ask questions. Within a few weeks, they're taking patient histories, performing assessments, and presenting cases to you for review. You guide their clinical reasoning, correct their technique, and give feedback after each encounter.
The time commitment fits around your existing patient load. Students handle much of their own documentation and prep work. Many preceptors say having a student makes their day more efficient, since the student helps with intake, follow-ups, and charting. And since you decide which students to send offers to, you're only working with people whose specialty and goals match your practice.
Set your preceptor pay. We pay you when your student starts.
Refer a student and earn an extra $100
Besides your $1,000+ honorarium, the referral program for students pays a separate bonus, and joining is free. If you reach a wider audience of students, our affiliate program for healthcare audiences pays on the same terms.
WHAT THE BONUS PAYS
Earn a $100 referral commission
You earn $100 each time a student you referred starts a rotation, not just their first one, for the life of their account. Students you refer receive a $100 discount on their first rotation.
STACKS WITH YOUR HONORARIUM
You still earn your full honorarium
The $100 is a referral fee, not precepting pay. If you precept a student you referred, you earn both your full honorarium of $1,000 or more and the $100 referral fee for that rotation.

Preceptor pay questions providers ask
Answers on eligibility, pay, time commitment and evaluations.
What exactly is a preceptor?+−
A preceptor is an experienced healthcare provider who gives hands-on clinical training and mentorship to nurse practitioner and physician assistant students. You guide them as they learn to treat patients.
What are the eligibility requirements?+−
You need to hold an MD, DO, NP, or PA degree with an active license that's free of any violations or suspensions.
Do I need a specific clinical specialty?+−
Nope. We match students with preceptors across every specialty, including Family Practice, Adult-Gerontology, Pediatrics, Psych/Mental Health, Women's Health, and Acute Care. If you're a licensed provider, there are students looking for someone like you.
How much do preceptors earn?+−
The standard honorarium is $1,000 per matched rotation, for both NP and PA students. You set your own rate: a higher flat fee or an hourly rate. We pay you when the rotation starts, not when it ends.
How do I get paid?+−
We pay your honorarium by ACH or printed check as soon as the student starts their rotation. Request payment through your preceptor account, and our accounting team processes it within one business day.
What's the weekly time commitment?+−
NP rotations typically run over one semester, and the student's school program sets the exact weekly hours. PA rotations are usually full-time over 4 to 6 weeks. You set your own availability, so you're always in control.
How long does each rotation last?+−
NP rotations run for the length of a semester. PA rotations are shorter, typically 4 to 6 weeks of full-time work.
How many clinical hours do students need?+−
NP students typically need between 100 and 250 hours per rotation. PA students complete their hours over a 4 to 6 week full-time block.
What information do I need to provide?+−
We'll ask for your CV, specialties, a copy of your license, board certifications, a photo, your facility information, and a W-9 form for payment processing.
What are my responsibilities as a preceptor?+−
You'll orient students to your practice, review their course objectives, provide regular feedback, and document their clinical hours. You should also make them feel welcome, give them more independence over time, and submit evaluations when their school asks.
To what extent do students interact with patients?+−
Non-psych students usually start by observing, then gradually take on minor procedures under your supervision. Psych/mental health students primarily observe individual sessions but may participate more actively in group therapy settings.
Do students have malpractice insurance?+−
Yes. Students either carry their own malpractice coverage or have it through their school's policy.
How do students participate in telepsych sessions?+−
Choose how the student takes part: in the room with you or remotely, whichever works best for your practice.
Do I have to sign an exclusive contract?+−
No. It's non-exclusive. We only ask that you keep students who reach you through Clinical Match Me on our platform.
Do I have to submit evaluations?+−
Yes, students may ask you to submit an evaluation of their performance to their school. This is a standard part of the clinical rotation process.
How many students can I precept at once?+−
We recommend no more than three students at a time. You can schedule them on different days if that works better for your practice.
Where do your students come from?+−
Our students come from hundreds of graduate nursing and PA programs across all 50 states.
Can I end a placement if things aren't working out?+−
Yes. If a student's clinical performance is unsafe, or they violate your practice's policies, you have every right to end the rotation.
Is there any cost to sign up?+−
No. Signing up as a preceptor is free. We only reach out when there's a student who matches your specialty and location.
