Essential NP Student Resources for Clinical Success

In NP school, you’re balancing coursework, clinical rotations, a certification exam and the cost of all three. The right NP student resources make each stage easier, and many of the most useful ones are free. We’ve grouped them by stage, from finding a preceptor to preparing for your certification exam, and linked our full guide wherever we’ve written one.

TL;DR

  • For clinical rotations, start with your clinical coordinator, then read our guides to finding a preceptor, logging hours, liability insurance and SOAP notes.
  • For your certification exam, study from your board’s official exam outline and handbook first.
  • Bookmark free clinical references: USPSTF recommendations, CDC guidelines and DailyMed.
  • To pay for school, apply for scholarships, file the FAFSA and budget for unpaid clinical hours.
  • For your well-being, ask the people you trust and your school’s counseling services for support. If you’re struggling, call or text 988.

What NP student resources do you need for clinical rotations?

Every rotation needs a preceptor, a record of your hours, liability coverage and clear patient notes. Start with your clinical coordinator and your program’s clinical handbook, then use these guides as you reach each step:

  • Finding a preceptor. If your program asks you to find your own preceptor, start as soon as you know your rotation dates. Our guide on how to find NP preceptors covers help from your school, introductions through your network, professional associations and short outreach emails.
  • Logging your clinical hours. The 2022 national standards set a minimum of 750 direct patient care hours, and ANCC and AANPCB certification require at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. Before your first shift, read our guide to what counts as clinical hours in an NP program. The guide explains which activities count and how your program checks the hours you log. Then follow our guide on how to track clinical hours to keep a log your program will approve.
  • Liability insurance. Confirm your malpractice coverage before your rotation starts. Our guide to NP student liability insurance explains how to tell whether your school’s group policy covers you or whether you need your own.
  • Patient notes. Your preceptor and your faculty read your notes to see how you think through a case. Use our SOAP note template for NP students, which includes a complete example and the mistakes preceptors and faculty point out.

Which NP study resources help you prepare for certification?

Your certification board’s own documents. Each board publishes an outline of what its exam covers and a reference list, so study from those first and add review materials later.

AANPCB candidate handbooks

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), which now operates as NPCB, offers FNP, AGNP, PMHNP and ENP certification. Each candidate handbook includes the exam blueprint, which shows how the questions are spread across content areas and patient ages. NPCB also posts the reference list it used to develop each exam. Read your handbook early, since you can apply up to six months before you finish an MSN or postgraduate certificate program, or up to 12 months before you finish a DNP.

ANCC test content outlines

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) publishes a test content outline for each of its certification exams. Its FNP certification page, for example, also has a reference list, the certification handbook and sample test questions with answers. When ANCC updates an outline, it posts both versions with their test dates, so download the one for your exam date.

Practice exams and review courses

Both boards sell practice exams so you can try the question format before test day, and both say to treat your score as practice rather than a prediction of your result. Commercial review courses, review books and question-bank apps can help you practice too. Before you pay for one, check that it follows your board’s current outline.

Which free clinical references should you bookmark?

These public resources are free, and you’ll use them on rotation days as well as for exam prep:

  • USPSTF recommendations. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force makes evidence-based recommendations on screenings, counseling services and preventive medications, and grades each one by the strength of the evidence and the balance of benefits and harms. Its Prevention TaskForce app helps primary care clinicians find the services that fit each patient.
  • CDC guidelines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes clinical guidelines such as its 2022 guideline for prescribing opioids for pain and its STI treatment guidelines, which also come as a mobile app.
  • DailyMed. The National Library of Medicine provides DailyMed, a database of the drug labels companies submit to the FDA, including prescribing information. Check a drug’s label there before you present a treatment plan to your preceptor.

How can NP student resources help you pay for school?

Apply for scholarships first, file the FAFSA for federal student aid (see the FAFSA question below), and plan your budget around your clinical schedule.

  • Scholarships. Federal programs, nursing associations, your school and your employer can all help pay for NP school. Our guide to nurse practitioner scholarships lists programs we checked on their own websites, with their deadlines and service commitments.
  • Your clinical schedule. Plan your job and your budget around your rotations before they start. Our article Do You Get Paid for Clinicals? explains why required clinical hours are unpaid, the paid programs and stipends that do exist, and how to manage the cost of unpaid time.

Which NP student resources support your well-being?

Start with the people you trust, then your school’s student services. If you’re ever in crisis, call or text 988.

  • Stress management. During rotations, you’ll work long clinic days in new settings, with regular evaluations, while you keep up with your coursework. Our guide to managing NP clinical rotation stress covers time management, building a support network and self-care.
  • Your school’s student services. Ask your program which counseling and wellness services you can use, including as an online student.
  • The 988 Lifeline. Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time of day. Conversations are free and confidential, and the counselors help with emotional distress as well as crisis.

NP student resources: common questions

What are the best resources for nurse practitioner students?

The best NP student resources are the official ones for each stage of school: your program’s clinical handbook, your certification board’s exam outline and handbook, and free references such as USPSTF recommendations and DailyMed. Add paid review materials once you’ve read your board’s outline.

Will FAFSA pay for NP school?

It can help. The FAFSA is the application for federal student aid. As a graduate student, you can use it to apply for federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans, which don’t require you to show financial need. You’ll need to be enrolled at least half-time. Some states and schools also use your FAFSA to award their own grants and scholarships. Federal loan limits for graduate students changed on July 1, 2026, so ask your school’s financial aid office how much you can borrow.

Still looking for a preceptor?

Clinical Match Me is a preceptor placement service for NP and PA students in every clinical specialty. Our founder is a nurse practitioner who struggled to find a preceptor as a student, and since 2014 we’ve helped more than 10,000 students find preceptors.

To find a nurse practitioner preceptor with us, submit a placement request with your specialty and rotation dates. Choose the states you’re willing to travel to, or enter your zip code and how far you’re willing to travel. We’ll match you with preceptors in those areas. Preceptors review your placement request and send you offers, so you choose your preceptor instead of being assigned one. Our AI preceptor outreach also contacts qualified providers near you, even when there are no matching preceptors in our network.

Although many students are placed within days, try to submit your placement requests as early as possible. The sooner you do, the sooner we can place you.

Free to join and no credit card required. Pay nothing until you accept an offer. Once you do, you’re protected by our Money Back Guarantee. If your school rejects your preceptor for any reason, or your preceptor cancels, you get a full refund or a replacement preceptor at no extra cost.

Sign up free and submit your first placement request today.
