The PMHNP Preceptor Shortage Is Real
PMHNP enrollment has grown faster than any other NP specialty over the past decade. Programs are graduating thousands of new psych NP students every year, but the clinical training pipeline hasn’t expanded with it. There simply aren’t enough practicing psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and psychiatric PAs to precept everyone who needs a spot.
The problem goes deeper than just numbers. Many psychiatric providers work in private practices seeing 20 to 30 patients a day on tight telehealth schedules. They don’t have the bandwidth to supervise a student, even if they’re willing. Inpatient psych units have their own bottlenecks, with limited student slots controlled by hospital education departments that prioritize their own affiliated programs.
If your school told you they’d help with placements, you’ve probably already discovered what that means: a list of contacts who stopped returning calls two semesters ago. Cold-calling psychiatric offices is demoralizing, and most won’t take students they don’t already have a relationship with.
Clinical Match Me was built for exactly this situation. We actively recruit psychiatric preceptors, including providers who’ve never precepted before but are open to it. You post your rotation needs, and we bring the preceptors to you.
How to Find a PMHNP Preceptor in 3 Steps
Stop cold-calling clinics. Let preceptors come to you.
1. Sign Up Free
Create your account in about 2 minutes. Submit a Placement Request with your PMHNP rotation details: whether you need outpatient, inpatient, or across-the-lifespan hours, your preferred dates, total hours, and location. Need multiple psych rotations? Submit them all at once.
2. Receive Preceptor Offers
Our system notifies matching psychiatric preceptors in your area. Interested providers review your profile and send you offers directly. Our smart outreach system also contacts psychiatric providers outside our network to recruit them specifically for your rotation.
3. Start Your Rotation
Compare offers, message preceptors, and pick the best fit for your clinical goals. You only pay after you accept an offer. We handle the paperwork between you, your preceptor, and your program. Money-back guarantee if your school rejects the placement.
Why PMHNP Students Choose Clinical Match Me
We Actively Recruit Psych Preceptors
Most placement services just maintain a database and hope for matches. We go further. Our smart outreach system identifies psychiatric NPs, psychiatrists, and psychiatric PAs in your area and contacts them directly. We recruit providers who’ve never precepted before but are open to mentoring a student. That’s how we fill PMHNP rotations that other services can’t.
Outpatient and Inpatient Psych Sites
Whether your program requires outpatient behavioral health clinic hours, inpatient psychiatric unit experience, or across-the-lifespan rotations, we match you with the right setting. We have preceptors in private psychiatric practices, community mental health centers, substance abuse treatment facilities, VA hospitals, and inpatient psych units.
$0 Until You’re Matched
No deposits, no sign-up fees, no subscriptions. Use the platform, submit placement requests, and message preceptors for free. You only pay $1,995 after a preceptor sends you an offer and you decide to accept it. Payment plans available up to 24 months.
Money-Back Guarantee
If your program rejects the preceptor for any reason, full refund. If the preceptor cancels before your rotation starts, full refund. We’ll also replace the preceptor at no extra cost if you prefer. Psychiatric rotations are too important to your degree to risk.
Don’t Wait Until Next Semester
PMHNP preceptor spots fill up months before rotations start. The longer you wait, the fewer options you’ll have. Students who sign up early get matched faster because our outreach system has more time to recruit providers in their area. If your rotation starts in 3 months, sign up today.
PMHNP preceptor spots don’t last. The sooner you sign up, the better your chances.

PMHNP Preceptor FAQs
Common questions from Psychiatric-Mental Health NP students
Most PMHNP programs require a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), psychiatrist (MD/DO), or psychiatric PA as your preceptor. Some programs also accept clinical psychologists for certain rotations. The preceptor typically needs to be practicing in an outpatient psychiatric clinic, community mental health center, inpatient psychiatric unit, or substance abuse treatment facility. We verify all preceptor credentials before matching, and we’ll confirm they meet your specific program’s requirements.
Yes. Many PMHNP programs require across-the-lifespan clinical hours, which means you’ll need preceptors in both adult and child/adolescent psychiatric settings. You can submit separate Placement Requests for each rotation. Child and adolescent psych preceptors are especially scarce, so signing up early gives our outreach system more time to find a match. We have preceptors in child psychiatry practices, adolescent behavioral health clinics, and integrated pediatric mental health settings.
Three factors make PMHNP preceptors especially scarce. First, the number of PMHNP students has surged while the psychiatric provider workforce hasn’t grown nearly as fast. Second, most psychiatric providers run high-volume practices with packed schedules, leaving little room for student supervision. Third, many psychiatric settings (especially private telehealth practices) aren’t set up for in-person student observation. That’s why our active recruitment approach matters: we don’t just wait for preceptors to sign up. We contact psychiatric providers directly and help them understand the precepting process.
Registration is 100% free. You don’t pay anything until a preceptor sends you an offer and you decide to accept. The flat rate is $1,995 for rotations up to 250 hours, and that’s all-inclusive. It covers our fee and the preceptor’s honorarium. No hidden charges, no separate payments to the preceptor. Payment plans are available from 2 to 24 months. Check our Pricing page for full details.
Some of our psychiatric preceptors do offer telehealth observation hours, but this depends entirely on your program’s policies. Many PMHNP programs now allow a percentage of clinical hours to be completed via telehealth observation, especially for outpatient psychiatric visits. When you submit your Placement Request, include whether your program allows telehealth hours. If they do, we’ll match you with preceptors who offer that option. If your program requires all in-person hours, we’ll only match you with in-person sites.
Free registration. No payment until you accept an offer.
